Can someone explain what these links do? Is it something that could get you booted off Google or anything bad?

Just to mention that I wouldn't really recommend you to have too much reciprocals.

Be very wary of them!!! Google will have some of those (gotolinks I've heard of being banned already) banned and if you use them they will remove you from the rankings next time they crawl your site.

Reciprocal links are not penalized only for blog websites, in other cases, be aware of their bad sides.

I've found that you have to be very careful to avoid what are called "Link Farms." These are sites that purport to be link exchange systems, but with over 50 links Google and others will write it off as a link farm and not list anyone there, and sometimes actually reduce your pagerank if you're listed there.

Better to have a great number of individual, carefully chosen links out there to your site, and check the pagerank in the Google toolbar first. (Get the Google toolbar at Google).

I would suggest manually getting links, it is time consuming but you are less likely to do your site harm as you have full control over who you trade with and you check out the sites yourself so you request what page the link is placed on, etc. I'm not saying that all of htem are bad but I don't trust automated link systems!

It's just an inevitability that all will eventually get banned and you pay the price. The only point of them is to boost rankings which Google and any other search engine is absolutely against.

I must admit sometimes i am sneaky and join new ones, let Google find all these links then remove myself before they get banned. It gives sites a temporary boost which can be useful.

This is a Article i found at dummies.com

Quote: Myth: Bad links to your site will hurt its position

Another common myth is that getting links to your site from "bad neighborhoods" (such as link farms, or Web sites unrelated to your site's theme) will hurt your search engine position. This isn't exactly so. It won't help, but it won't hurt, either, unless it is obvious that you are actively interacting with link farms or FFA (Free For All) link pages.

If bad links did hurt your site, you could assassinate your competition by linking to their sites from every lousy link farm and FFA you could find. So the search engines can't use such links to downgrade your site.

Hope it helps.

well it depends if you put the linkfarm code on your site. if google finds the php code on your site then it knows you are participating and WILL ban you.
