Where can I read about effective banner agvertising?

Try a search for banner ads. You'll find hundreds of articles everywhere. "Effective" is a subjective term. Ask 10 people you'll probably get 10 different ideas and opinions on how to run banner ads.

In your dreams. Forget banners and search engines. They are much more work than they are worth.

Instead, spend a couple of bucks and get targeted advertising and make partnerships with other companies.

Hamburger bun companies should latch onto any hamburger companies they can find and ride them to the promise land (you like that analogy)?

Forget search engines? No way! While you can't count on all your traffic from engines they shouldn't be over looked at all. Depending what your site is about you can get great traffuc from engines. Not over night but in time.

I am with Jaiem: SE are very useful, especially if you own a "niche" topic related site. A positioning among the top 50 is worth gold. My site is positioned about 10,000th in the main SE but you can find it on the top 10 of many minor SE and I can assure you that it really pays!

You can get good exposure with banner exchange too (both with networks and direct trade with high trafic sites).

Too many people ignore banner advertising as an ineffective method of advertising. Just because the industry is in the toilet doesn't mean the whole medium is crap. If it is done properly, banner advertising works and works well. I very rarely buy ads on any of the networks, banner advertising requires a lot of targeting. Seeking out sites with the kind of demographics you are looking for and having an effective banner can bring in a lot of sales.

Right. As a matter of fact I achieved better results with banner exchange networks that allow you to target the categories - and even the accounts! - where your ad will be displayed to.

I was positively surprised to find out that my banner click-thru rate was as high as 80:1 , specially after earing that something like 200:1 is an excellent result...

Now I'm launching my own banner exchange network, solely directed to shopping sites with subcategories and accounts target/exclude option. Stay tuned: I'll keep you up to date with the results!
