You might do better going to forums on the topic of your site (finance). Or contacting webmasters of those sites directly.

This forum (TWF) allows link exchange requests if you are a regular pariticipating member here. We generally don't like people using our forum just to promote their sites and get link exchanges or website critiques without contributing elsewhere.

In forums you can get better links for (webmaster) related websites only (*mostly*).Better way is to directly contact your niche websites.

It's also a pretty passive way of trying to contact people. You're putting the word out and expecting them to find you instead of finding and contacting them directly. By contacting them direclty you can customize your message to and really target their specific needs as well as your own.

Is that so? How could it come to that conclusion?
Is there any fact research on that?

I just came to this thread looking for something else. I didn't see this question before.

It's not a problem with more links on forums AFAIK, but with search engines idenfifying self-created links. Forum signatures are an example of this - you put that link there, it doesn't count as a "vote" by someone else for your site. So if they can, SE's will try to spot these links and devalue them. Same goes with blog comments, wikis, and other sites where you can post your own content. If you created that link to your site, it doesn't count nearlly as much as a link created by someone else.

If you go to Yahoo and do a linkdomain: search on your site you can see this happening. On that link command, the highest quality links appear at the top, with the lowest quality links at the bottom. For my site, my forum signatures are always at the bottom - even below links from other sites that are nofollowed.

We also have a lengthy thread here about why link exchanges aren't that great for SEO anymore either.

Find out who are linking to your competitors, and ask them for a link.

LOL, I just mentioned the same thing in another thread. At Yahoo you can do a Linkdomain: search to find linkbacks for any site. Unlike google, they do show all the linkbacks and even sort them in order of value. So the highest value links show up at the top. Great way to see what's most effective for your site and what is working best for the competition.
