Hello everyone, could you give me suggestions on how to get sales to your website for a short period of time? Other than posting on classifieds, groups.. what are other alternatives that you use to promote your website?

1. The content of your website should be relevant to the product you sell through it.
2. Advertise the website/ product before targeted customers through product sopecific boards.
3. Always include your signature on forum posts.

I have recently been getting some traffic to my sites and to various affiliate sites using videos posted to YouTube.
Obviously if you are looking for short-term traffic, PPC would work...And you can check out more than Adwords.
Yahoo advertising and ASK.com PPC advertising work and I have found that a lot of times there is less competition and cheaper cost per click.
Other than that, you may try focusing on some popular web 2.0 sites such as digg and del.icio.us etc...
And trying to make popular, newsworthy blog post.
And anytime you can think of something very funny and newsworthy, I think that is your best chance for a traffic burst.

I think that PPC advertising works fine. First time it must be main way of promotion.

Are you looking for better traffic or better conversion rates? Two very different questions. Conversion problems often have to do with poor usability and site design.

Offer a good service so your customers return back to your site and purchase more. Also, using things like product price comparisons can help you gain sales plus you have to make your site sell the products for you.

Provide as much helpful information for each product. But it also depends on your niche. One of my clients is comparing different products which he offers
(compares product A with product B) This strategy works well for him.

Providing lots of helpful information about the products is a really good strategy. It's helpful for people, it's helpful for search engines, and it can get you linkbacks.

I would say PPC, but as Megan has pointed out, a well presented website is a must.
Take them to a focused page which gives a brief outline of the product/service. Introduce testimonials and other methods of making people think they are 'buying safe.' There are many people out there who waste money on AdWords because their webpage is both dated and lacking information.
You can always run the landing page by us beforehand...

The best way to make more sales is to spend more time on conversion development. It doesn't cost a dime (if you do it yourself) and can double or triple your sales.

I never really had much luck in that department until I just simply came up with a few tricks of my own over the last several years. Although there is no way in hell i can get myself to reveal my greatest secrets, I will tell you of a really good one...
1. Create alot of your own html web templates. (must be origionals made by you)
2. Place your advertisements within the templates that you created.
3. Register at a template dispersal website like freewebtemplates.com and submit your created templates.
If your templates are good enough, you will get hundreds of downloads of your templates (each) per day. they even show how many downloads you have on the site. Best part is you are targetting nothing but people who create websites... If you want to target a specific customer, just make your template of that theme. eg... if you sell movies, make a movie based template. and so on...
Also... if you have google adsense, place them in the template. I make about an extra $200 a month from that alone but of course I have nearly a hundred templates on that site under 3 different usernames.

You must have a good design for your site, as well as good content to get more sales from the traffic you get from Search engines. In short, good landing page.

You can try the Yahoo Overture or MSN adwords....or Google Adwords (they are expensive). Try to see what is happening with an email marketing... buy some links on very relevant sites.
These are just a few techniques, but use your imagination. Read some marketing books about online sales, the Internet is full of them.
You have to know that before earning any revenue you have to invest some money.
Good luck
