Press Release: Done thru “Professionals” = $600.00 = ( 0 ) new members.
Banner ad on a forum with 225,000 members. The Forum limits the number of ads run each month so that your ad is shown over 1,000,000 times in a month. = $500/month = (10 ) new members.
Banner ad on a forum with 32,000 members. = $450/month = ( 15 ) - new members.
Banner ad on a forum with 25,000 members. = $450/year = ( 22 ) new members.
After spending the $$$, I found this article: Headline of article printed in USA Today… 3/26/2006 = “Screaming banner ads get little notice” Conclusion at end of article = “The study presented echoes the findings of an earlier study that reported “Consumers are Blind to Banner Ads”
Google ad words: $200.00 for ppc program…ran about a month = ( 0 ) new members.
Started and ran my own email program (SPAM). I sent a very honest offer, letting the recipient know a little about the site and a link to it. I complied with all of the CAN-SPAM regulations. Results = Total emails sent ( 101,366 )
Returned/improper address ( 43,135 )
Request to “remove” from future mailings ( 316 )
Complaints sent to ISP ( 10 )
New Members signed: ( 1,696 )… AOL had my site cancelled because of 3 complaints, I had to move to another Registrar and Hosting company.
As the results were so good and I did not want my site shut down again, I decided to spend the money and pay the list brokers on the internet to send a mailing to their “Opt-In” list.
Results:
Purchased opt-in email list (sent by the Seller) $100.00 for 50,000 = ( 0 ) new members. I was able to get my money back.
Purchased opt-in email list (sent by the Seller) $100.00 for 25,000 = ( 0 ) new members. I was able to get my money back.
Purchased opt-in email list (sent by the Seller) $650.00 for 500,000 = ( 0 ) new members. I was able to get my money back.
Purchased a pop-under program… $50.00 for 25,00 pop-under ads = ( 0 ) new members.
Contacted three of the top rated opt-in email list brokers…. (Sit down for this one) Quotes for mailing were: $4,000, $4,500 & $6,000 to mail to 50,000!!! (Each list comes with a toll-free number to the nearest bankruptcy attorney at no additional charge!)
Started a program to list on the Free Classified Ad sites. Listed on the following sites and results.
domesticsale.com ( 0 ) site views
http://superads.com/ ( 0 ) site views
livedeal.com ( 2 ) site views
http://www.inetgiant.com/ ( 0 ) site views
http://www.olx.com/index.php ( 0 ) site views
http://www.pricelookup.com/ ( 0 ) site views
You have to draw your own conclusions.... every site has a specific theme and will draw better from one type of promotion versus anther.

Well dani...in answer to your question:
1.) I have the money to spend
2.) I was dumb enough to believe the "experts" that suggested these methods.
3.) If your site is the one listed in your Sig....I checked it out... you only have 92 members on a forum = if you intend to grow to my site's 1,800 member size, you will need to spend "some" money or wait a very long time to get there.
4.) I listed my experience with the different methods and results to hopefully save someone else the same mistakes.
Conclusion: When the "experts" give you advice... ask for some form of proof before you take their word about what will work.

Why not use that money on creating a site a little more easier on the eye enticing people to come into the website after sending out that newsletter (spamlist)?
Seeing as you have the money to spend on emaillist brokers, who are mostly a bunch of cons who have emails that are 5+ years old.

Hey outback - don't feel quilty for spending money
Just proves what I always say about SPAM - no matter how much people complain about it, its not going away because it works.

So true, 10 years from now people will still be whining, Spam will still be sent and Spam email will still be working.... it is simply human nature for all three to occur.
Thanks for the "positive" reply...

Hi dani190,
Can you share your advertising secret? We have a new site for geeks with new content. However, our traffic is very low. Our budget is very limited. We've tried google but that has become very expensive.
Any ideas/input from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I'd have stayed away from spam email altogether. You should have tried to improve your advertsisng to target those people who regularly take part in forums. How? post on forums, have sig line swaps with other posters, target keywords including the word forum using ppc.

Sounds like an idea... then you don't think that the 1,696 members that I gained was worth the time spent?
Or would you be working to change the UCE mail rules to allow "legitimate" sites to use email as a form of advertising?
Note: I have been tracking my spam mail and am "only" getting real Junk... no legitimate offers due to the current fear by web site owners of having their site shut down....
It seems that the only people that have been stopped by the anti-spam laws are the "legitimate" site owners...those that abid by the rules are the ones in fear of having their sites cancelled. Does something seem wrong with this situation .... or is it just me?

I'd admit, email campaigns have converted extremely well with companies that I've worked with or consulted for. (The founders of those companies are gung-ho about it.) However, when it comes to my own site, I'm scared of lawsuits, complaints, or being black-listed because unlike them, I can't afford an attorney

Advertising is a very difficult field especially if you have no experience previously. Its all a case of trial and error and trying to get the right advice. Never trust the word of the person/business who is selling the product only trust people who are not related to the website or business. That would be my best piece of advice

The Internet is just a giant board of monopoly...More often than not I would say 'unrelated and unbiased authority's' tend to be a lot more than unrelated...
I know this probably isn't the right thing for me to say because I am one of those 'unrelated unbiased authority's' You will just have to take my word I'm legit...The rankings on my site are completely user generated to prevent bias of any kind...If you plan on asking will I be affiliating with some of the hosts...The answer is yes...HOWEVER it makes no difference AT ALL that I do this, the ratings and reviews are not modified or changed in any way...I'm hoping through affiliating I won't have to bombard my guests with unsightly Ads...Flame me if you wish...While your doing that though, ask yourself what you're gaining from doing it...Sorry I just went off on a little tangent :S If anyone has any advice for how to get my site out their PM me or post it...
I don't like those results >.> I really hope mine are better...I barely have a budget above zero...

Good thing you didn't spend big moolah on one setting, it's best to always have options, see which one works.
