Link baiting is when you post content specifically for the purposes of attracting links. This could be a written article, a video, a free application. This content needs to be exceptional in some way (interesting, thorough, funny etc.) It helps to have a catchy title, and you need to get it seen by the people who could link to it.

link baiting is simply a means of creating content that spreads like a virus on the internet. The materials used in link baiting can provide a valuable information resource to their readers and visitors or it may be just rumor or gossip posted on the web site for the sole purpose of “hooking” as many links as possible.

Greetings!

Linkbait is essentially a piece of content placed on a web page - whether it's an article, blog post, picture, or any other section of cyberspace - that is designed for the specific intention of gathering links from as many different sources as possible.

With the rise of the blogosphere, meritocracy and social bookmarking sites, all it takes is one interesting page on a site, someone to notice the page, and a few people to share the link - and before you know it, you've accrued a large number of links across a wide variety of sites.

Modern Life is a great example of this - having only launched the site a couple of days ago, our article on common passwords accrued a large amount of interest. According to Yahoo, the MLIR domain now has 1,240 backlinks, all within the space of about a week.

Link bait is any content or feature within a website that somehow baits viewers to place links to it from other websites. Link bait can be an extremely powerful form of marketing as it is viral in nature.

Link bait is content on your site to which other sites link because they want to, not because you ask them to. Traditionally, links are hard to get, requiring you to sacrifice your first born child (and at least link back, which nullifies their value in some search engines.) But with link bait, you "bait" your content and sit back and wait. Of course, you can be a little proactive and get a viral story going, too

Well, some really good answers here.

There are a few people (not in this thread, elsewhere i mean), that think badly of
the "link bait" term. This is due in part to the older term: "bait and switch".

I create link bait quite often for my boot camp members.

Anyways, keep in mind that the "bait" is the tasty reason for them to bite.

Linkbaiting encourage others to link to your website. Linkbait usually happens in your niche area. For example, I write the content writing, copywriting, and blogging on this blog, and if I write something really convincing, people are interested in those things that I want to connect to my post.

Link baiting refers to creating something natural to increase your sites's popularity. It may be the rise to a controversy, some humor, an interesting article, a plug-in or a theme, etc. Means anything that attracts visitors.

I think instant link baiting ideas can work really well but you have to be fast and quick witted, a good example of this was the day Google instant came out someone created an image depicting Google as an instant coffee (caffine and instant)

I feel that although link bait is good, your product and knowledge around that product should be the bait e.g a blog post about how to create really good link bait!

It's the best way to gain traffic to your site.
Much is said that, however, comes at the point of link quality.
If people who propagate the contents are in their area is good. Otherwise, this is good too, but the effect will be low.

well it depends on how u practise link baiting. if u overdo it then it backfires and it has to be done in a sensible and ethical manner.
