Can anyone tell me the best types of links to build for my site.
Not only links that will help my SERP but also links that will get traffic to my site from the links themselves?

The best link you can build is from a related site, then links from authority websites is more valuable.

A one way backlinks (they link to you but not visa versa) is the est type of link, and preferably from a related site.

The sort of links you describe don't come easy, but one truly great link can do amazing things for a site.
There are two main ways to get them:
1) with money
- secretly buy them (very risky)
- corporate sponsorship or partnership (e.g. be a featured exhibitor at a tradeshow)
2) with great content
- either on your site (then people will link to it) or
- by providing an article or a review for an authority site, getting a link as the author.

Here's my List of Link Building Strategies that are still useful
You’ll get permanent One Way Link if you don't Spam them
1. Directory Submission – it is useful if the directory has quality links and doesn't contain bad links. Check out my list of directories.
2. Forums Posting – links from other quality forums are ok but it's better if you will get links from related forums.
3. Blog Commenting – when I do blog commenting I make sure that the blog is related to my site.
4. Submission to Bookmarking Site – make sure that you don't spam the bookmarking site with lots of submission links from your site. Remember you need permanent link if you spam them, your link/account will get deleted. Check out my list of bookmarking site.
5. Yahoo Answer Posting – useful for frequently crawling of search engine.
6. Submission to Niche Directory – it's good to get links from niche directory. It adds value to your link relevancy.
7. Article Submission – it doesn't give high traffic but the keywords that is use as anchor text in article content helps to improved SERP.
8. Press Release Submission – like article the keywords in anchor text helps in SERP and also helps for promotional campaign.
9. Blog Post – if you have blog for the site that you were optimizing and has related blog post with keywords on content linking to your site, the keywords that you use as anchor text will help your site improved rankings. It also give traffic to your site.
When doing link building It doesn't matter to me whether the site is no-follow or do-follow as long as it's related to my site. I also don’t look for the PR of the site because if you want your site to have natural links you should not just build links to get links from do-follow with high PR site.

I just want to comment on using directory submission. If you want to get results from directory submission, you have to be ready to put time and effort to it submit your site to various directory sites MANUALLY. Submit to only non-reciprocal sites (one-way link) and add your right to the appropriate category. It's involve some work but it's effective when properly done
Manual submission To 400+ Directories
One way reciprocal links,PR0 thru PR6
Varied Anchor Text

You can write articles about your site, doing this can give you traffic from them as well as backlinks for your pages from the bio box.

I would say do a mix of links:
articles such as ezine or goarticles - or a specialist article site for your niche
social content sites like squidoo
social bookmarking sites like oyax
social news sites like mixx propeller silonkable (I've just read that digg is now largely nofollow but haven't yet checked this out)
your own blog (eg weebly, opera, wordpress)
press releases
directories, blog comments etc
Obviously if you can get a one way link (eg if you sponsor a charity) or a link from an authority or related site then that's great.

My favorite links are articles. They bring in traffic and increase you on the SERPs.

I am sure participating on your niche related forums, blogs and groups will give you backlink as well as direct hits from the sites itself too.
As well as, Article submission to high quality article submissionb directories too will help you to get direct hits from the article itself at the same time, you could get a quality backlink too.

Link exchange is a powerful marketing strategy but it is to be remembered that the links to your website should be from related sites and on topic. It doesn’t matter what type of links you are getting but links from high quality websites will help you to rank better and be more visible in the eyes of search engines.
