I'm curious, if I have a really popular site, can I remember earn that much from web advertisers? I mean, enough to make it a full-time job?

The answer is obviously no to making an income by just slapping banners up. That's essentially why so many dot-coms bit the dust.

Sure, it's possible to make a living (look at SitePoint.com), but it largely depends on the TYPE of site you run HOW popular it is. Also, your ability to get advertisers is important - or if you will use a third-party to provide ads. The first way will generate more money for you since you are not splitting it with anyone, but it is more time consuming and involved to sell your own advertising.

A lot of business tried to go the banner-income route and failed spectacularly.

Are they really making a living from the money they earn from that site? There are a few poeple involved in it too. I don't know but I would be really surprised if they all earn enough money to support themselves from that site. Just curious.

it's hard making a "living" off ad revenue alone, but it can be done. it was much easier a couple/few years back when then net was all the rage.

however, u can have a profitable hobby (ur website(s)) from ad revenue alone.

Yes... they have their own offices, in fact, in Australia and Co-Founder Matt Mickiewicz I know lives off it, he's been on TV before talking about it. They pay several people full-time, as well.

The answer is no, unless you are generating a million unique hits per month.

If you really want to make money on the net, then you need to treat it like a business, and come up with a game plan that will make you succeed...and this can only be done by hard work...and yes...spending your own cash to do so.

I have many sites up...some generate good revenue...some get a ton of hits with no income coming in at all...and some are just for show and fun...

5 Years ago, you could have a chance of selling ads to advertisers...After all, when the internet started out...it was the 1998 Gold Rush...now it's not.

The internet can still make a great income for those who have money to spend. For example... I advertise on Overture all of the time...and I'm not talking about .05 bids... I will outbid everyone and spend a few thousand in a week, to gain instant traffic that can and does generate a profit for me... However, I'm not living in a mansion...and I do have a good product/service to sell on several different sites.

My suggestion is this... Focus on one product...and make it a product that you can afford to buy/ship and sell by means of cheap marketing, and you could in fact work from home.

But again, it all comes down to hard work and planing...
Hope I didn't discourage you at all..not my intention....
