Is using chat pop ups a good idea to increase sales?

Hello..............

I have been looking for ways to increase my conversion rates (www.candylandcrafts.com), and would like to hear anyone's opinion about the use of a "Chat Service" (basically a per order service, like an affiliate).

When someone who is at your web site, chooses to leave, without placing an order, a window pops up with a live operator available to try to "save the day" and convert that visitor to order.

The pop up window might say "Hi I"m Alice, I see you're leaving, but I can get you 10% off an order today on our latest special, etc etc" The visitor could then click on the link and have a 2 way text message with Alice.

If the visitor gives an order, then the site owner pays a commission to the Chat Service.

They claim 10% to 15% increase in sales.

Here's an example, go to: www.truecredit.com then just leave the site

You can have the chat pop up appear anywhere in the cycle ie: if someone puts something in your shopping cart, but then chooses to leave the cart without finishing the sale, etc

It is strictly a commission based service. Pay only when they get an actual order. Think of it just like an affiliate.

I kind of liken the approach to a more sophisticated kind of spam. That kind of stuff can also drive people away, and maybe for good.

But, I may be over reacting.

Anyone have any experience with this? Would appreciate any feedback at all!

Thanks

I'd say that would be more annoying than anything. I've already decided to leave this site, and now somone is nagging me to stay? Reminds me of telemarketers who won't let you poilitely get off the phone.

What something like this could be good for is to find out why the person is leaving. With that you wouldn't need a special service, just a form. That would give you much better information to help you improve your site.

Looking at your site, I think there are many other things you could do to improve conversions.

Just curious...why do you sign your post with your email and website that points to the product your asking about? It's almost like your affiliated with the website you're "looking into".

I signed my post with my email because I "forgot" that I had a standard signature affixed to any posting automatically.

I'm not "affiliated" with the web site I'm referring to, it's "my web site" that's why I asked the question.

Thanks for your reply!

I tried the one at true credit. What special offer did they give me? The same one that you get by signing up (I know, as it just so happens I signed up with them over the weekend).

If you actually have a live person typing to you, maybe. To have an "automated" chat like that the one true credit has, well IMO that just reinforces the thought "you are trying to put one over on me" I mean, come on, you say I'll talk to a live person then try to fake it, what else are you telling me that will be crap? That sums up how I feel about most automated chat sessions.

Then there are the sites where people will figure out your discounts, and repeatedly use them. ie. There was a site my cousin bought from many times. He figured out if you went through checkout all the way up to the page where you actually give your credit card #, and THEN try to navigate away, you had a popup offering you an instant 10% off. No where else in checkout did you get this for navigating away. Every time he ordered, he did this.

However on the flip side, there is the thought, that "well they are leaving anyhow, and I don't pay for the chat unless someone buys" so what do you have to loose.

I agree with Megan, there is a lot that can be done to make the site look more professional and more "current" (in look, to be honest, the site looks 10 years old to me)

Good luck with it though, and if you do decide to utilize a service like that, stop back and update this thread with the results, good or bad.

Hi Greg.....
Thanks for your comments. Right on(!) if I may say so. One of my concerns was exactly the point you brought up, but I wanted to be objective and see what others have to say.

The bottom line? I'll pass on that "chat" idea.

The site is 9 years old - and we are in process of an upgrade to try to change that image.

I appreciate your comments - thanks.

I checked out that example site, and yes, it does seem very spammy to me too. Especially that the pop up is not even appealing to look at, it seems more like a computer error pop up.

This kind of feature would give me a bad impression of the site (it just did) and I wouldn't be interested in returning. It seems to say, "I'm not confident enough in my copy or my offer, so I'm resorting to pop ups."

hmm, I agree with webmania, I would think that most of your visitors would see the pop up as spam or annoying, reducing the authenticity of your site. Try something that is a bit more convenient for your visitors, live chat does work well when implemented correctly.

Take a look at www.hab.la.

Instead of popping up, this live chat floats in the corner of your website on all pages, making navigation convenient for your visitors while they chat with you.

Hi,
According to me its a good idea to increase your sales.
There are many benefits due to live chat window in corner of your every pages because visitors can confirm immediately about his requirement and about your sales or services.
