I'm a bit of a noob in this area. I am working on a site and was wondering if anyone could give some advice on how to get the major search engines like Google to list a site when certain keywords are entered. I know about spiders, but are there other ways of doing this that produce better results?

Just for the record, Im not looking for some crazy way to get 5000 visitors daily, just want to increase traffic for this site.

Thanks

The only way of getting Google to list a site based on a certain keyword is to make sure that your website theme is based around that keyword. If you have a website that talks about mud huts in Africa then you are probably not going to get Google to list your site under the keyword/phrase "Golf Balls."

But there are other ways of gaining traffic. You could buy keywords through Google's Adword or you could just buy links of advertising from other webmasters.

How do you go about purchasing keywords?

You should first focus on which keyword phrases you will be targeting. I'd say know at least 40-50. Next you'll need to optimize your pages for which ever search engine you want to target. Follow the links in my sig, you will find more than enough information to help you get started. Then lastly you will need to work on your backlinks. Backlinks will be where you put most of your time. This will help you get higher rankings.

Praey, I can not answer for all search engines, but I will offer some of my experience.

For my search engine I get many submissions, and they are (were) backed up to Dec 2003.. solution? I went to a $9.95 review fee, and it was amazing how effective it was in cutting out the trash.

We now review sites that are at least serious enough with their business to pay for our time to make the review.

Our review process is simple we are looking for strong content relevant to the keywords selected. Plus good HTML design. Many of the sites come to us with a "title" that read more like a description than name of the business (common mistake) we take the time on our end to make the correction. Poor choice of keywords is the next problem of most.. they in up spamming and often use words to generic like "and" "the" "a" "best".. you get the picture. If it is not to bad we will also make the correction on our end.

Then comes bad HTML something that we can not help from our end. So we send a rejection letter with an invitation to send us an email with the URL once their problems have been corrected and we will review again at no cost.

Our service is really not that much different than others we are "hungry" for good sites with strong content relevant to the users keyword search.

Short example, and I will use Google because so many have a lot of respect for Google.. I am one that respects what they have accomplished. OK, here goes.. my Son was selling his house so I helped him with a design to sell buy owner. Part of the site referenced my personal thoughts about selling "by owner".. Google had it listed in their "top" 10 listings under the search phase "buy owner", out of 9,500,000 plus sites listed.. Zero meta tags, and it had never been submitted.

What does that tell you?? We are all looking for good content.

I hope my comment have helped.. when in doubt consult a good SEO person.

Bets Regards
