Is really search engine optimization needed?

SEO and SEM are strategies to market the site and place its link before the maximum number of eyes on search engine results.

While it is an important part of a marketing strategy, it is only one part, and effective marketing includes other parts such as non-internet advertising, and link-building, social bookmarking, and much more.

In a specialized niche market you may be able to easily rise to the top of search results, but that is a niche - not many visitors anyway.

IMO the best SEO begins with building a web site that is useful and/or fascinating with lots of great content (including user-contributed content).

If your marketing strategy relies on search listing hits, then SEO is extremely necessary.

If your marketing is dependent on other ways, including word-of-mouth, then SEO may be less important - but should be included nevertheless in any marketing strategy.

It can also depend on the competition. If you have a website selling PC's/Laptops then I would suggest you want the search engines to love your site as much as possible as there are many such sites.

If you have something unique, then it's unlikely you have a lot of competition and therefore only need basic search engine optimisation.
Any site should follow the main guidelines by the major search engines though, otherwise your site can get penalised and even banned.

If I were selling PCs I would forget about SEO and depend on other types of advertising

But in a mid-range competitive market, yes, SEO can give you the edge.

If a site is good quality and well built then it may not need deliberate SEO. Most of what is required for good SEO is just good quality site building and natural linkbacks. This could also be the case for well known people with good connections who can easily get backlinks for new projects.

However, what I often see happening is that people building sites without regard to SEO often make a lot of crucial mistakes. It's a good idea to have an understanding of SEO so you don't inadvertently hurt your rankings.

Like others have said, it also depends on the market and what your goals are. If you're trying to rank highly for a popular keyword phrase then you need to do some SEO.

Yes SEO is needed. I have to say that depending on the niche you need to have huge budget for the SEO to rich the results and to keep them. And as was said in here SEM becomes better alternative.

SEO and SEM are strategies by which webmaster can increase their business. Its a marketing concept.In this technique we target on search engine by particular keywords which are related to our website and genrate traffic so user can come on our site.we follow many things to increse web trafic like Onpage optimization, Offpage optimization,Social Bookmarking and blog writing etc.

I have found that if you do some basic work of the web page, so lay it out nicley and without toooo many frames, then you should be ok providing that you have some good content and some, (But not to many) keywords there to link to your content.

The slight amount of SEO for like only 10 minutes a day can have a drastic effect on your rankings over time.

I just do that at the moment and everything is ok, i am still looking to improve and overtime i may get the website redesgined.

SEO is needed because without it no body could find you on google. The better seo you do the higher you will be on google's search engine

Today their are many e-commerce website on internet. All the sites have big competition so increase the business owner of site is use marketing of sites and web-marketing campaign called SEO.

Seo takes a lot of hard work and time but it pays off.
i work on my site from 7am till 11 am changing content etc.

SEO is the important part of internet marketing bcoz one who have own site want to get business from the site, and a real seo can provide the good business from internet using.

I have learned a lot about getting traffic and know that there is a whole world of information one needs to know in order to do proper SEO. It is a never-ending job as well.

If it is a public site we want other people to see our site. If we are selling something we want other people to buy from our site. To increase sales we need traffic.
Traffic comes from main 3 sources
-Direct traffic
-Referral traffic
-Search Engine traffic

If we need search engine traffic we definitely need SEO.

In my own experience I proved that SEO is indeed important and needed.. I have a real estate blog I made a sale because my keyword is #2 in google and yahoo.. and that's because of SEO..

If we want to generate the traffic from search engines we always need to do seo for the site...and in case of referral site we also need link building that is the part of seo..
