Does anyone have any basic advice for promoting a blog? I want to get mine out there a bit (once it's working again!) since I'll be blogging more about web related type stuff. I don't really want to put a huge amount of effort in (no time, and it's not really a big deal), but I would like to do a little bit of promotion.

Thanks for any help!

frequent other blogs and put your blogs there too... also try to PING bloglistings for every new blog entry you make... also try an be a member at technorati and finally join blogging communities... it will help spread the word out, if your topic is of interest to them youll definitely shoot up fast since theyre gonna post-back your entries...

Basic advice (or maybe this is stupid), do something dumb or silly. Roll a ping pong ball with your nose for some distance (or something better) and leak it to the press, the sillier/dumber it is the more they will take notice.

How about this, start a competition, say you want guys to wow you with romance, a poem or pick up lines (or anything) and offer your hand in marriage or something to the winner (a years free rent, your car, your spoon collection signed by the beatles).
No need to follow through with it if your entry is the winning one Wink

Look back at all the internet news stories, all are out there, the couple who married online without meeting, the girl who sold her pregnant tummy for advertising, the guy who sold his body for advertising, the bit of toast with jesus on it, million dollar homepage ... nothing normal in that lot

I think Busy's got it right! All the hype is usually about something silly or unusual. Although, if you are creating a strict business blog, you hardly want to put ping-pong ball rolling on it.

Um, honestly, I was looking for something a little better than that. I can't be bothered to go around posting in forums in the hopes that someone might see my link (been there, done that, wasn't worth my time). I also don't like link swapping for the sake of link swapping - if it's somone I know and like, cool. If it's a complete stranger and it's just done for traffic then no.

I will check out google blog search though - are there other blog search sites or directories that I should get listed in? That's the sort of thing I was looking for.

There was a thing here on TV last night about blogs, how the journal was once scared ...
Bottom line was 95% are crap, 4% are ok and 1% are ones that have a big following.

There was a guy in prison who sent his stuff to his mate to post (now being censored from within) but started to get a bit of a following, they reckoned 6000 unique page views/hits a day was good for a NZ blog

Actually, what I was really looking for when I first posted was basically Technorati. I'm up on there now, just need some more time to spend there to network. Are there any other blog aggregators or sites like this I should get on?
