We all know that now pop-ups are about the only ad media format that makes any money. What do you think should be the fine balance between showing four or five popups a page or not displaying any at all?
How do we display them, and thus make a little cash from our hard work, but minimize visitor inconvenience?
Would be glad to hear your suggestions,

The more you have the less likely your visitors will return, pop up killers are big business these days and many more people disabling javascript if they havent got the option to disable pop ups.
pop ups are spam - totally unwanted so use with caution as it could turn around and bite ya on the butt.

I question this.
I think that the money is in completing transactions. In issolation, no one cares about how many times an ad pops up or is displayed on a page, the real question is how many widgets did it sell or (more generally) how many viewers ended up doing what the advertiser intended (visiting a web page, purchasing a product, calling a car dealer, take a survey, etc)
Opinion: Pop-ups are on their way out. Many people block or suppress them, they are obnoxious, they usually don't look professional, the list goes on.
I suppose it is easy for me to talk because I am not in an advertising-driven business, but it seems most logical to present users with targeted advertising and rely on an strong affiliate program where you are rewarded for presenting users with ads for products they might actually want.
Google is a good example of this. They are making good money from presenting people with unobtrusive links related to their interests.

Pop-ups are evil!
Seriously I think most people hate them and I'm sure that they don't make money they just annoy people. That's why pop-up killers are making so much money!

...I agree...
.I disagree...
Banners also make money too, infact, I would say, if you wanted to advertise, then advertise using banners, you't see people closing banners when they popup do you?
...Yeah ok, so I have programs that close popups and disable banners, but people have to download or buy those kind of programs first.
As with popups you don't need any extra software, you just have to close them.
For those who are smart, they may not see any banners too, because they disable images in their browser configurations.
Bottom line (IMHO)? Only a third(?) of advertisements only ever get seen by people because people find them annoying, but if you must have them then, banners are the way to go

The real money is in making pop-up killers
I've got nothing against a pop-up or 2 per site, but more than that is annoying
I remember seeing something about how people tune out banner ads and pop-ups. In fact, I couldn't tell you any of the last 10 ads I've seen because I know where they are placed on pages, I know what they look like, and I ignore them
I used to be in a banner driven business, but after the "crash", I got out of it.

I disagree with that too as I think pop-up killers will be standard on all browsers very soon.
Presently I'm using the free Apple Beta browser Safari... pop-ups blocked.

I use one popunder per user session/12 hours and few ads and popups at all on my main page. I feel the first impression is crucial, so I've removed a banner, cube button, and any popunders from my main page. FYIW, I use Fastclick, which makes it easy to control how often popunders show.

Hate them
I run a service site that rarely will I even put an advertisement on, let alone a pop-up. Pop ups on a service site is just the tackiest I think.

Frankly, few people click banner ads anyway. Even fewer click popup ads.

Does everybody have the same thoughts on pop-unders?
Personally, pop ups get up my nose, but pop unders don't annoy me nearly as much.
Why? Simply because they don't interrupt me and I can close them wehn I'm done with the main site...

a pop is a pop, if I didnt ask for it I dont want it, why should I have to close it, imagine surfing five sites at once and getting an extra five plus windows pop up/under, not only does it suck resources but is a real pain in the modem.
If you go to any download site you'll see programs to stop pop ups/unders and block slow loading banners are the top downloads

That's one way to look at it, but others will say that popunders are more annoying because they make it harder to close as you have to open them to close.

What about those pop up/unders that open waaaaay off the screen and you have to alt+ctrl+delete or rightclick and click close to close them? I find them the most annoying

The absolute spawn of Satan pop-up is the blank pop up that rythmically creates pop-ups and when you try to close it, it recreates itself.

If you dare, check it out here: http://ac2i.tzo.com/cgi-bin/search
Any search will bring up the pop-ups.
I tried it once just now... looks like it isn't as ferocious as it once was (been awhile since I've used that site).

In case you're wondering...I am joking. Pop-ups are the Devil...not to be confused with Pops, which is a nice tasting morning treat.

I'm using ATGuard at the moment which is a three in one program
Pop-up killer,
Cookie Blocker,
Firewall.
However, you can only find them in "underground sites" ... I have no idea why they stopped making the program...
...Lucky for free "application" CDs huh?

Reasonable, I guess.
I just don't like pop-up ads...they annoy me almost as much as unfunny TV commercials (the funny ones are good sometimes), and I surely don't need another program running on my puter. If a site has more than one pop-up, I will simply leave.
