I have some free time here and there, and would like to fill it up with some extra work. I live in Canada and noticed that many stores, such as Best Buy, Futureshop and Staples offer various system services -- like installation, virus removal, optimization, etc.

I want to offer this and I know I can do it and a much cheaper cost.

Any suggestions about how I should go about putting my service out there to the local community? I don't have the ability to advertise on tv or or in my non-existant computer store like them.

I was thinking of designing a flyer and just printing off hundreds and delivering them to each house in my local area... any other ideas?

Thanks!

(I randomly help people with computer problems... but I'd like to start offering it as a "standard service". If anyone does this regularly i'd love to hear from you about it!)

I think you'd really have to emphasize the difference between you and the "big guys" - personalized service, attention to detail etc.

For promotion, definitely look into getting a spot in the yellow pages. That would be my first stop if I was looking for help. Also try local directory sites. Make sure your promotional materials are high quality - this is what turned me off from a lot of local services. Terrible websites both in terms of visual design and content. Your content should be accessible to the average computer buyer. Basic, easily understood details about what you can do for them would be best. Also make sure that the content is well written and accessible to a range of audiences.

It's really important that people are able to trust you. They see a big brand name like Staples or whatever and assume that they're reliable. People wouldn't be so sure about a smaller shop. You'll also want to target people who know enough not to go to bigger discount stores but aren't sure where to go after that.

I always had a "problem" using a website for local work... I always used my website to target the global community -- not people within driving distance.

What do you think of designing a flyer and dropping it in the mailbox/door handle of the houses in my community? Including a coupon for purchase of $x or more, etc...

Would it be advisable to point out the competitors price, and potentially "advertise" them? On one hand it could be beneficial to point out the difference in cost.

But you'll need a URL for them to go to with more information. I often choose services out of the yellow pages that have a URL I can visit over one that doesn't. Same with any other promotional material. Giving them a URL might take them one step closer to actually calling you.

The problem with flyers is that you're targetting users who don't need you right now. They'll probably just throw it out. You need to have your information available to people who actually have problems with their computer *right now*. Including a coupon would be a good idea though - that might make people more likely to keep it.
