I am currently building a fitness site and have a couple of questions on advertising.
When it is up I would like to have a sposor, perhaps a banner of a sports supplement company. Aswell as making my site look more professional it would obviously be nice to make some money.
1. However as I am still building it should I wait till completely finished till contacting companies yeah ?
2. At what point can I expect companies to cough up or agree to sponsor me. Must I be able to show them I have a certain amount of hits first or is a well designed site with a good marketing plan enough ?
3. Roughly how much money would a companie offer you per hits or does it even work that way ?
4. What do companies look for in asite when deciding to sponsor it ?
Basically how should I go about it ? Perhaps I'm being a bit premature as I think my site will be finished 100% in about 2 months.
Any please come back to me, if you wanna see my site so far then heres the link.

Hey Cloughie,
1) When you start off advertising you will most likely have to go CPC (Cost Per Click). While these networks (such as eADs, Valueclick and such...) have some restrictions they most often accept most sites. It is more harder to join CPM companies such as Flycast / Burst because they really do review your site. It would probably be best to wait until you have at least something up.
2) Again CPC it doesnt matter really the number of page views/impressions that you get.
3) It can work it many ways. I am more familiar with CPC and CPM ( there's also pay per lead, and a few other affiliate programs). CPC you can expect to get $0.10 - $0.30 a click through. but your Click Through Rate (CTR) will not be high. CPM you may get $1 - $5 per CPM once you get a considerable amount of traffic.
4) CPC networks only really consider if the website is up and running (networks like eADS and Valueclick). Bigger networks like Flycast will look at what kind of audience you have (it's always good to get some sort of site demographics), this is used for targeting ads.
I dont think its ever to early to think about advertising. While you may nto start off making the hundreds or even thousands of dollars, you'll at least get a grasp of how the advertising industry works and thus improve your revenue with experience.
HTH,
Ravi

Associate Programs, where a site will pay a percentage of a sale when the visitor comes from your site, are usually a tough way to make money. It benefits the company paying more than it does the Associate. For example, you show a banner 1,000 times with a click through % of 1% and you send them 10 visitors. Then the chances of them buying are even slimmer. Even if they do buy it is worth it to them because that becomes their customer, so the next time they want to buy from them, they go directly to their site instead of yours. Plus, as Ravi stated, they get the benefit of branding their site without paying anything or very little.
On the other hand, if you are just starting out, it can't hurt to join a few. Then as you grow and get paying advertisers, you get rid of the affiliate banners or put them in a less prominent spot. I would recommend joining programs that are related to your site. Since yours is health and fitness, selling music from CDNOW is probably not the best way to go because your visitors are probably not looking for music. On the other hand, they may be looking for supplements or sports gear, which is why I suggested the ones above.
Best of luck! Unfortunately, it can be a long process. It was for me, but I learned alot (and still am) along the way.

If you want to get some banners up on your site and make a little bit of money, try joining some affiliate programs. There are a ton of sport supplement and equipment retailers out there that will pay you a % of each sale they make that are referred from your site. Here are a few off the top of my head:
http://www.valusport.com
http://www.mvp.com
http://www.fogdog.com
http://www.peakhealth.net
http://www.mothernature.com
You might want to get your site completed before applying but you can always try and sign up right away.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you very much for your replies. They have made things a lot clearer.
I'll check out those links too..
A quick question though. Cost per click would be where a site pays you each time someone goes to the advertiseds site from yours yeah ? even if they buy nothing.
What are the programs where the advertiser pays you a % of any money spant on their site as a result of their ad on my site ?
Also you said 0.10 to 0.30 was the norm for per click buit said the click though rate would be low. what does this mean ?
thanks again

hey,
1) yes Cost Per Click is when you earn money whenever someone clicks on that ad. That's all they have to do.
2) It sounds like you're talking about a commission type of affiliate here. i have that with CDNOW, whoever buys anything through my link I get some money. Truthfully, I have sent CDNOW thousands of visitors (maybe 20,000 or so) and only one or two people have actually bought anything.
3) Normally CPC ads are known for "branding" unlike CPM where alot of them offer incentives for clicking or are very interactive. Thus the CTR of CPM ads is normally 1% or +, while the CTR for my CPC program is only 0.15 %.

I understood where you were coming from.
Since you have a music site it makes sense because you are targeting your market. I was suggesting that Cloughie looks for one in his as well and don't just join one because it is available. There are a lot of programs out there and it is important to choose ones that work well with his site.
