the best thing to do to get free traffic is to learn some search engine optimisation.. have a read of this artice about link building it might help build traffic while your site is in the "sandbox"

I agree with 5meodmt - you need to pay attention to SEO in order to start getting search engine traffic. The following linking strategies will help you out SEO wise and also start driving traffic to your site in the interim.
1. Add a blog to your site that you regularly add content to. Remember to ping the major blog engines everytime you add content.
2. Write articles and submit them to article directories (remember to include your website in the resource box.) This will increase your back links and as people use your articles on their sites you will start to get traffic coming in.
3. Post on forums related to your sites content and put your site in the signiture. This has really helped some of my sites that are in very competitive markets.
There are many others that might help you out, but right now that is all that I could think of.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to join on a such a service such as linkmarket, or any other "link exchange", because most of people there will add you to a directory, which in the end will result in your site being PUNISHED in google.
I've seen this happen, i have a "experimental" website on which i used it, and that site gets next to 0 traffic
It'll do you more harm than good...

I agree, I do all my link exchanging manually and I think that is the better way to go. It is more time consuming, but you will be able to acquire more quality exchanges in my opinion. I think as far as link exchanges go, quality is better than quantity.
