My site, http://www.pinnacledeals.com has been up since around July yet I am getting hardly any traffic (about 50 hits per day).
I have submitted to all of the major search engines and have been listed in a few of them, I'm using 2 banner exchanges (LinkExchange and Free-Banners), I always use my URL in signatures on message boards, but still am not getting any more traffic.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A site I always recommend for promotion help is PromotionBase.com. Give it a look.
You might try signing up with GoTo's or FindWhat's pay-per-listing program. This will let you bid on keyboards and buy visitors for your site that are searching for sites like yours. If you have a commerce site, this can really be beneficial.
Also, try forming partnerships with sites that are similar to your site's theme, but don't directly clash with your topic. Otherwise, you'd be sending visitors to competitor's sites!

Unfortunately, as a college student, I don't have enough money for pay-per-click engines. I can barely pay the $60/month in hosting
I have thought about trading links with other sites related to deals, but they all have links to my competitors.

I tried clicking on your URL and it gave me an error. Not too sure what is wrong with it. Promote your site in everything you do. Since I can't see your site I can not give you the proper advice. I know when my site first came up I mentioned it in everything. I still mention it but now that I am on search engines and have great word of mouth I have toned down my marketing. Maybe I need to start it up again to get another boost of hits. Try to get people linking to your site. I would be happy to exchange links with you.

Thanks for the tip. I have submitted to several free sites, but this has not really been very effective for me (i usually get only about 2 or 3 hits per day).

Is there something wrong with 2-3 hits a day from each site? Get listed at 10 different sites and you'll be getting 20-30 extra hits. Not only will this slowly boost your traffic, it will also increase your link popularity, which will help in your search engine traffic.

Linking with other sites is a good way too generate traffic even if they link too some of your competitors. Your bound too get a few even if your competitors are litsed above and below you on other sites. I also focus on newsgroups and have had success generating extra traffic in that way. I also find "word of mouth" is getting my business results as well. I've had my site up for a year and have noticed on my logs that more and more people type in my company name on msn. This tells me I'm finally starting too have "a little" prescence on the net. I do have one "hypnotic" marketing idea that has seemed too have an effect on my website traffic. I used a small white graphic using light green lettering in the background, the light green lettering is my way of trying too drive "home" my company name too my visitors, it's not an overwhelming color and people seem too remember the name. I hope this has helped.

giambona, well done on your site. It does have a good look to it and should make your visitors welcome. You have put some hard work into your site by now, but the real work is just starting. Promotion of your site will take time and patience, but above all, don't ever stop doing it. Here are a few tips that may help you on your way.
I notice in your keywords you have the term "deals". What kind of deals? Do people search for just 'deals', not usually in my opinion. I think they look for more specific things, like "deals on cars" or "clothes on sale". Work on getting more specific of what type of traffic you want, remember you can't get everyone so get specific on who you want to target.
Once you have targeted a specific group of people, then build a page specifically about that term. This page will be the main page for this subsection of your site. Put all the content you can find about or relating to this specific subject on this page and on sub pages under this topic specific page. Put text links to this main subsection page from your home page and interlink all your subsection pages within each subsection.
Now go to each big search engine or directory and run a search for the term you are targeting. Go through all the listings and find other web sites which offer a free link and submit the main subsection page, or all if allowed. Also, you may feel a little resistant, at first, to put links on your pages to competing sites, but in the long run you always come out ahead. Always look for other similar sites to trade links with, here's why.
Lets take 6 web pages, each with 3 links to other sites. One being your site and 5 other sites. Now, take 6 different people all going to a different site. One goes to your site and the other 5 go to the other 5 sites. When a person reaches a page they have a chance to go to 3 different places. With this hypothetical situation, you will, on the average, have 2 visitors from the other sites, but the one visitor to your site can only leave once!! The site who trades the most links with other sites always wins...
If you continue this process with other specific terms you want to get traffic from, over time you will have all the traffic you need. This will bring targeted traffic from search engines, directories, and very targeted traffic from other sites. Remember, the only thing you know about your visitors when they arrive at your site is where they came from and what they searched for. Therefore, always try to get your visitors to the page that keys into their interest. You only have two real ways of doing that.
First of all, with targeted pages ranking well under these terms at search engines and links pointing to the right pages on other web sites, this will automatically bring the right visitors to the right pages. Though, this is not always the case in the real world. Many sites will only link to your home page or many times (way too often) the search engine will list a page on your site which is not always the best page for that term. So, you need a backup system to get your visitors to the right info quickly. Make sure your navigation, the wording/images on your site, or any other means will put the right page or content in front of the right visitors.
Here are a few other things to think about also.
1. Start an affiliate program and submit it to the hundreds of affiliate link sites/directories.
2. Look for web site award sites and submit yours for review, these always look good on your site to visitors.
3. Offer free services which will send your URL to other people. Such as free email with your web site signature at the bottom of all outgoing mail. Or some type of program where visitors can send good deals to friends, with your signature again.
4. Start a newsletter. Don't just stuff it with deals though, people get sick of that, but fill it with helpful shopping tips, recommended services, and product reviews.
5. Get creative...
6. Have fun always...
7. Sleep once in a while...
8. Read a good book on copywriting!!!

What I have found very helpful, is using The Ultimate Marketing Machine, in addition to what netcommr suggests.
The Ultimate Marketing Machine will help you submit your page to millions of sites, world-wide, in only a couple hours or less. It's what I use, and it works great. <>
Also, your website looks FANTASTIC
very professional, yet comfortable and third generation.
However, are you using some type of program to track your site's hits, and see where they're comming from? If not, you can use SiteMeter for this purpose. It's free. Get it from http://www.sitemeter.com
You see, you want to start tracking where the hits to your page are comming from, and then you'll start to learn what marketing has been wasting your time, and what has been profitable. Then you can focus on, and grow the profitable ones.
Anyhow, please keep us updated on how your e-marketing adventure goes

Since my previous post was edited, and the URL to The Ultimate Marketing Machine was removed, you can also access it, from my webpage, which can be found in my signature. I have a link to it, called Free Ad Submitter.

Giambona,
One suggestion I have for your home page is to remove some of the text. It's a bit crowded.
If money is a problems, then I would suggest that you start by taking a look at an article I've written called Ways To Make Your Website Trustable. It's at coachmaria.com/articles/trustableweb.html and below is another article I've written - and use for a Web Marketing 101 class I teach.
Ways to Drive Traffic to your Website
and keep them coming back!
· Build a solid business foundation by having a business plan and a web site plan.
· Create a customer service policy.
· Find easy and secure ways for your clients to pay you.
· Go out and network to bring people to your site.
· Be consistent (brand) your company.
· Check your links.
· Make sure your website address is on all your literature -- business cards, brochures, newsletters, letterhead, email signature, everything!!
· Offer added values that make sense (affiliate programs)
· Provide a book list for that would go with your product or service.
· Use your web address in your signature for emails (change it regularly to highlight something new or promote something)
· Add a "Recommend This Site" on your site Provide chats or bulletin boards (forums)
· Offer a Free ezine and have a subscription box on the pages most viewed on your site.
· Teach classes or speak to groups about your products. Add to favorites script such as "add this page to your favorites list".
· Conduct periodic contests and announce the winners on your site.
· Minimum search engine submission information.
· Create a "What's New Page” on larger sites. Write articles post them to your site and submit them to other sites.
· Design some quizzes http://coachmaria.com/articles.htmlParticipate in forums.
· Be part of a web ring.
· When you find a site that your ideal client will visit and it allows you to put your web site there for free (like ivillage, about.com) do it! Just remember to link it to your domain name site.
· Search engines look for certain things so it is crucial to make sure your site is “search-engine friendly”. META tags go in the HEAD section of the HTML page. header tags, META tags, keyword tags. This can get very confusing and there are several places to look for help. Http://selfpromotion.com offers great advice to help you get recognized. Or do a search on your favorite search engine for "meta tags"
· TITLE tags: Title tags should be 60 or so characters and have some keywords in them.
· META tags go in the HEAD section of the HTML page.
· The best way to submit search engines is individually. Be careful with programs that assist you to submit. Use a free e-mail address when submitting by using a free submit service.
•http://www.registerit.com •http://www.scrubtheweb.com/abs/meta-check.html
· Use keyword text in the body of each page – as close to the beginning of paragraph as possible.

My site has been around since Sept and I get about 100 a day. It's still low but it's geting better. The best methods of generating traffic are
1) Get listed in YAHOO!!!!
2) Exchange links with fellow designers
3) Don't be afraid to post in forums for feedback
4) Word of mouth
5) Finally most important- Have CONTENT to keep visitors coming back.
Yahoo generates a huge amount of hits for me, do what you can to get listed. Also, don't be afraid to email ppl asking if they want to exchange links, worst case is they say no, rite?
Goodluck

Hi,
I am an internet marketing specialist and have to promote websites often by submitting them to search engines and all. I came across this website http://www.pagesubmission.com offering some real cool stuff for site promotion. I used this and founded it very effective in increasing traffic on websites and hence increasing business. Your url is accurately submitted to search engines that allows automated submissions and it also directs you to those that allow only manual submissions. Meta tagging and a lot of complicated tasks are done easily by some in built features by just pressing few buttons. It saves a lot of time and effort that you can use for other things. It has immensely benefited me and my organization. So I would suggest u too to give it a try and see for urself.
Regards
Kathy
