Let me start out by saying I typed in something along the lines of "webmaster forums" on google and found your site here rather quickly. So, you must be doing something right.
Anyways, some friends of mine and i have recently (w/in last 3 wks) put together a music news/reviews/interviews etcetera site, http://www.musicisnotdead.com , and i was wondering if you guys would like to give me some advice on how we can spread the word about our site. It's not a "for income" come per se, we're just doin it for fun.
Originally i was thinking about getting some adwords, but figured that would be a waste. we collectively think that right now content itself will bring the people. is that always the case? i have already submitted it to most search engines i can think of.
Any constructive criticism is surely welcome as well.
Thanks,
Rob

Good content will definitely help bring them in. That's an excellent approach to take, IMO. The more content you have, the more opporunities you'll have to get listed in teh SE's.
One thing that could help is becoming involved in music forums related to the genre(s) you're covering. Leave your link in your sig and let people get to know you in the forums.
If you want a full review of your site, please post in the Critiques forum
Just looking at your site, you might want to work some keywords into the page titles, and work on descriptions too. I'm noticing right now that your front page is missing the entire head section. Even if the SE's don't put too much importance in the description, it is displayed to the user when they search. Having just a title show up might cause users to skip on by your listing.

What type of music are you targeting? I might be able to offer some advice...

I know i should have an obvious answer to that but i dont. I think we're along the lines of the "indie" vibe (sans the huge bands) but at the same time i think we're open to anything. Not entirely sure where we're going yet.

LOL
Well like i said man, it depends on what type of music you want to target. I know dance music and punk music web promotion pretty damn well, seeing as I've been doing it for so long, both on my site, and with others.
Anything beyond that though, no clue.

i feel that we only fit a little nitch of what is out there in music today. for that reason i kinda feel like its pretty hard to get your site out to the right audience. not sure how to go about it. adwords?
as of right now im trying to figure out how to get us circulating more in search engines. megan on here suggested that we had no is our html. is that meta stuff? is that what the search engines pick up? so if my headline fit in
would i also want to make an with the same headline, so the seach engines can find me?
excuse my ignorance

No, that's your HTML coding. You want to structure your site properly so the SE knows what the important information is. If you don't know what an H1 tag is you really need to read up on your HTML
I think your best bet for promoting this site would be to do some link exchanges with related sites. Anything your audience might be interested in would be good here. You could also create some "link to us" graphics that visitors could put on their sites. Visiting forums, as I said, would be another good idea - it wouldn't even have to be music-related, per se. Just something your audience might be interested in.

Try to get listings in Yahoo directory and other directories, they do work.
Also, just contact other fan sites and exchange links. This is the best way to succeed.
