I have increased my Alexa ranking to 623,000. I have tried adwords and paid inclusion with Inktomi. I have some what optimized my copy and keywords, but "web design" is a lost cause as far as search engine placement, so I have tried more unique combinations such as "new media development". But no matter what I do, I cannot seem to generate more than an average of 15 unique sessions per day. I have listings in many firm list sites, plus I have generous webmaster forums that allow me to run an ad (like here). What else can I do to increase traffic?
Christian_SEO, webmistress, I could use a comment on this.
Thanks in advance.

To be honest we don't expect to get many online requests for work so we don't really worry about getting rankings for 'web design' or such like. We do get traffic for more localised terms such as 'hampshire web design' 'gosport website designers' that type of thing. I would concentrate on that type of keywords rather than generic terms so that you are more likely to get enquiries from it rather than just loads of traffic.
As with any type of business you also need to consider offline marketing as well, whether it's flyers to be handed out to businesses, adverts in papers/magazines, handing out business cards, etc and make sure that you have your url on everything!

Our marketing strategy was always more focused on "the ground". At the moment, we don't even keep proper stats of hits to the site (only a raw log). We'll begin any sort of internet marketing only as a second priority, and even then I expect it will be localised, like Julia mentioned.
We're presently trying to get a marketing regime involving business cards, fliers and info sheets going. Time will tell how that gets on.
The other obvious source of clientele is referrals from existing clients, or recommendations from known contacts -- networking.
I wouldn't worry much about visits.

Submit to directories is my suggestion I get about 50 unique visitors a day just from the smaller directories. Im not listed in dmoz or any of the other big ones. But I hear they bring tons of traffic

Hi,
You can advertise your website. You can have Full Page Popunder as your advertisment; therefore, people will see your website and if they are interested, you can get sales. It's a good way to get both traffic and sales in one easy way. Also, they have specific targeting, so the visitors are who you really want.

You can try submitting your site to business directories, which can help you getting very targetted traffic. The advantage is that when somebody goes to your site from a business directory, you can be sure that he's looking for your product/service.

I'm listed in a few directories online that send me hits regularly. The best bet I think is to form mutually profitable strategic partnerships. I have partnered up w/ a marketing firm that used to only do tv/radio marketing and is now getting into internet marketing. Have gotten a couple of projects through them thus far and hopefully more to follow (I'm told). It can be tough to find people like this but always keep your eyes open and possibly sometimes even take the initiative to seem them out.
