Microsoft Smart Tags?

Anybody know about Microsoft's new Smart Tags? Apparently, their new XP will put an overlay over webpages, select certain words, and provide a link to another site.

Apparently, the only way to get rid of them is for the webmaster to "opt out" by writing some more code.

Anyone know anything more about the Smart Tags?

Not quite. It was quite the rage and discussion a couple of weeks ago, though.

It WAS going to ship with Windows XP, it DID ship with Office XP. They apparently are bowing to the pressure. Apparently meaning it will likely be in there, but disabled. Which means users could ostensibly enable it themselves.

It's supposed to be optional, and there is great debate about this and all other client-side hijacking of the content.

You can find more about it in the Promotion and Marketing area (where I am moving this thread). http://www.webmaster-forums.com/showthread.php?threadid=15045&highlight=smart+tags

Sorry...I didn't realize I had posted in the wrong spot.

One more note re my post above. I sent an e-mail to Department of Justice expressing my displeasure with Microsoft's tactics. They have an e-mail addy set up just for Microsoft:

Microsoft.atr@usdoj.gov

BTW ... what's the code to block Smart Tag?

This site has also figured out a way to block TopText if you're interested in that too.
