Main Website and Hundreds or Location Specific Sites

Hi All,

I have a few questions that I have failed to find the answer for and hoped that some of the SEO experts would answer that for me.

I know of quite a few UK based company's that create their main website and then hundreds of secondary sites that replicate the main sites content but specifically for a local city. Each secondary site links back to the main site and in all cases their SEO rankings are number #1, both for the secondary sites and for their main site.

I have read everywhere that duplicate content and link farms are a terrible idea and Google will destroy your sites reputation, so how can these company's do this? They have been around for years so they are not one hit wonders and they make a stupid amounts of money from this.

How do you think this is possible? And do you think this is a good idea, if not why not?

Your ideas and opinions are very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Duplicate content and link forming will surly destroy your website, Branding is all about name and if once your website get ban then surly you need to come up with another name. Which is not good for brand name. So avoid these techniques as much possible as you can...

Thank you for the reply,

But this is what I don't understand, the company in particular (cannot mention) have been doing this for years and have had incredible success dominating top rankings for nearly every city in the UK, how have they managed this without Google dropping their ratings?

Thank you,

Leon.

Hi,
Even I am shocked that, how such sites didn't cached by Google yet? Because this is very strange case. Lots of sites got dropped when Google crawler crawled them. I think the reason might be the traffic to the site.
Actually, popularity is also an important factor to get good location in SERP ranking. May be the traffic to such site will be enormous and Google giving importance to that factor this time. It is just an assumption I can't say anything exactly about the reason.

Sub site and main site may different, and it's better. I think this depends on what produts you're going to sell. Also it's important that the manager of the company who decide what to sell.
