I have quite an extensive mailing list that I have built up over the last couple of years, but I have never used a mailing list manager or program and now it has got to the point where I really need to.
Mailman is already on my server but I can get on with it at all. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would suggest you to create your own script (ofcourse if you know a scripting language).
You can start by phpmailer ( http://phpmailer.sourceforge.net )
