Dear fellow Webmasters,

I'm working on the sites listed in my signature, we are getting pretty good traffic to the first one due to the relevant content on our website. My main philosophy has always been "have the goods to get the traffic". I don't try to beat the system, just an honest site with modest means. Well lately I've been a bit curious about my main site danieljamesco.com and the fact that we have no link exchange going at all and we have been in business for 5 years without it, (this must brake some sort of record or something.) At any rate, I would like to get an exchange program going but admittedly I do not know where to begin. I'm looking for some good general advice, A couple quick questions are:

1. Can link exchange programs ever work against you?
2. What is the quickest and cheapest way to get good links? (you knew I'd ask this one)
3. Is visiting forums relevant to our website and offering good free advice to others with a link in the signature, good practice?

THANKS to all who may help!

Alex

PS any other techniques outside of link exchange are welcome…oh come on share your secretes…

Link farms can work against you -- the quality of the links can really matter. What you would ideally be doing is getting into local business directories, international directories, et cetera.

How is your traffic? Are you getting the business you want from your site? What are your goals for your website? Are they tangible goals that you can measure?

Why do you want links? And what kind of links do you want to get?

What advice do you offer on other websites that is related to your business? Forums can be a great place, and if they offer a signature spot a good way to increase Name Recognition which can lead to future sales but is difficult to measure. If you do this, be aware that you are always "on" and your forum postings will affect the opinions of potential buyers, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

Also be aware that there will be those on forums who will tell you that you've lost their business for any perceived slight -- they were not potential clients 99% of the time but rather bullies trying to get their own way.

So, if you can answer some of those questions, more specific advice from here may be valuable for you.
