The best way to gain link popularity is to exchange links with high PR, relevant content sites. Other ways to gain links are write and submit articles to article directories, post in blogs, and make valuable contributions to discussion forums with a link to your site in the sig.

alot of the bigger sites buy advertsing on high pr pages and also get the bonus of the PR links.
