This is probably a stupid question, but are there any resources out there that give one an idea of how much they should charge for ads on their site?

I use Burst! on my site and am pretty happy with it so far, but lately I've been approached by individual companies looking to advertise on my site...the problem is that I have NO idea what to charge.

Thanks for any help!

Well, after viewing his site it's clear Burst! doesn't have the tracking capabilities they say they have to make sure members are in compliance with banner placement. Heck, I think I might start putting those sorry Burst! banners at the bottom of my pages too, instead of near the top.

Eric,
There are a few sites that deal with this type of topic - but they are of little use because the rate varies dramtically depending on your site/demographic/traffic etc.

You're site is a games site, fairly targetted.
I would say demographics would be mostly males under 25. Not the best demographics but not the worst either
Say, standard banner, $10-14 CPM (cost per thousand impressions). I am charging approx $7 CPM for a smaller banner but could get away with more due to better dems.
Hope that helped.

Look at sites that are a similar subject to you.

I would suggest something between $5 to $20 per thousand exposures. Remember the more targetted the advertiser the more you can charge per thousand.

JP & John: Thanks for the input! At least now I have someplace to start with my 'negotiations'.

fairhousing: haha...don't worry. That banner (on the main page) has only been at the bottom of the page for a little over a day. I was experimenting with the layout of some graphics and forgot to move it back up to the top. I assure you it will be in 'compliance' again very soon.

I have been wondering the same thing myself - I currently have $25/CPM posted, as it is a very targeted site (hosting directory). I also think a little bit higher cost is justified by the fact that unlike other hosting directories, the site isn't littered with banners - I have a self imposed limit of one per page, 468 x 60 (or similar size).

Does this sound like a fair price? Traffic is kinda low right now but we just launched, so that is expected... I also set the minimum (for now) at only 2,000 instead of 10,000, since my site is targeted at the smaller hosts for the most part.

I wonder if that's just too high, or maybe I should lower the price to around $10 or $15...? At least temporarily anyway - so what do you think?

BTW, I looked at a couple of other hosting directories, one which is pretty new as well and littered with banners, charging $25/CPM...

I would start off low and increase slowly while watching how sales are affected, if they drop significantly you have reached a point beyond what people like to pay for what you offer.
