Hi
Call me stupid but I am having a hard time in trying to understand how website get top in Google etc
Now I am about to launch a dating website with a new idea which I cant go into now I always thought search engine ranking was to do with links now when I did a market leap link popularity check I was shocked
The keyword I used for Google was UK dating which is my main keyword
URL List Total Google/
AOL/
HotBot MSN Yahoo!/
FAST/
AltaVista
venusdating.co.uk Google rank 5
2,977 5
137
2,835
datingdirect.com Google rank 3
8,604 69
3,687
4,848
ukdating.com Google rank6
22,118 197
3,503
18,418
flirtbox.co.uk Google rank 1
173,234 358
335
172,541
Now if its about links I can understand the Google rank 1 website but what about Google rank 6 it has the second most links but its still only 6 in Google this is what I don’t understand
Also a few more questions
• I understand articles are a good was to promote how do I track what the top websites are sending out is there an article popularity check for them
• What offer methods are they to get me in the top page of the rankings
Thanks for your time

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I quite understand you here. Are those SERP rankings or Page Rankings listed? And what exactly are the three numbers underneath?
SEO is not just about links. It is not just about Page Rank. It is not just about the words you have on the page. It is not just about how your page is layed out and structured. It is about all of those things and more. Experts suggest that Google has over 100 ranking factors. It all works together. There is no magic bullet to get your site to the front page, and it is a long ongoing process.
The thing you need to understand about links is that quality matters way more than quantity. So the site with the second-most links may have a lot of poor quality links while the sites that rank above it have more good quality links.
High quality links are good - the best way to check what are high quality and what are low quality links for your site is to do a linkdomain: search at yahoo. This will show all your inbound links in order of quality, from highest to lowest. Low quality links are things like forum signatures, directory listings, or other similar high volume links. High quality links are one-way links from pages that are considered authorities on the topic and already rank well.
You can also run the linkdomain: command on your competitors to see what links are working for them.
Take a look at this list of SEO ranking Factors from SEOmoz:

Or do a search for "Search engine ranking factors" - there are lots of lists.
