my new website is being starved of visitors because I simply don't know how to go about attracting traffic for this kind of site.
Can anyone help me?

however linking is always a good idea.. try finding like sites and linking up with them.

There are alot of ways to increase popularity and visitors.
When linking up with other sites make sure they are relevant to your site otherwise you end up with useless visitors.
Also stay clear of opt in and email scams... way to hit or miss..
Ads in papers and local markets are a big +
Also there are alot of pieces of software out there to help automate your processes freely
There are also alot of tools that can be used to gauge your site.
the best traffic is SE traffic always has always will.. So make sure you are SE friendly..

Also under NO CONDITIONS are you to "buy" cheap hits...
If you are thinking about it please by all means take a match burn the money in your hand because you will have a lot more fun with that then the results of proxied ,404, redirected, popunder popup BS traffic....

Take a look at google ad words provided by google.com . They are a reputable business for advertising.
some areas to do some research in to located places to post information:
Online classifieds
Online directories
Contribute to forums.. I've read many articles that state "Posting information in Forums that is informative and on topic can bring your site many visitors from that forum plus search engines spidering your information you've written."
Here's a few areas that will help you online and to do some research;)
Offline:
contact your local phone company about a yellow page advertisement
contact a few radio stations about advertising. Offer a promotion for people so they will come to your website.
