How effective are affiliate programs?

I'm looking to list products on an affiliate program, like clickxchange. How effective are these programs? Are these effective ways of getting traffic/sales?

I think it comes down to a cost-benefit analysis - how much do you have to sell to pay for the program plus time spent on maintaining it? Once you have the figures with you, then you can determine how viable a solution an affiliate program is for you.
