anywhere you can register .com's at. This is nothing special just a regular domain name as a hyphen is a valid character in a domain name.

Well guys he is talking about using '-' in place of a dot after www like www-domain.com. I don't think it is possible to register such a name. A hyphen is a valid character in a domain name but cannot be used in place of dot.

I have yet to register a domain with a hyphen in it where they ask me "Are you using the hyphen to replace a period?" They don't care, as long as the domain name follows guidelines, it is good. If that was the case, then are we supposed to assume we are reading a forum that "highjacked" the site webmaster.forums.net ?
You can do any of these:
This is not an accurate statement. Whether the www. is nessesary depends on the server setup. Where I have hosting at, they automaically configure my websites for either domain.com or www.domain.com (and I can manually set up anything.domain.com).
There are many times I have just entered a domain name and the site doesn't load until I change it to have the www. in front of it. And also I have typed in www. in front of some, but site won't load until I get rid of it. Also there are many times where you get a different server for each version.
When we revamped a college site, it used to be www.commtech.university.edu. I had requested that we also be assigned ctc.university.edu, and soon found out we also had to request www.ctc.university.edu, becasue so many people were automically trying this. Had professors who insisted that all websites had to start with www. (yes, I know that te designation was originally used to indicate the Web Server at the domain, so in good practice, it SHOULD have it).
Bottom line, it depends on how the DNS is set up for the domain.
Also note, this can make a difference on secure sites, if you go to https://domain.com/ and they have their secure certificate purchased for https://www.domain.com, you will most likely see your browser warning you that the certificate does not match the site you are trying to view. It's still secure, but may make unknowing peole shy away thinking something isn't right and they don't want to give private data.

it's simply an SEO/advertiser way of trying to swipe other domain popularity, like if you got www-google.com.
As for www. www. is technically a subdomain, there is (or was, I can't get to it ATM) http://no-www.org which has the goal of eliminating www. as a common thing. So www. is not only not necessary, there are people rabidly against, kind of amusing.
