The web is such a huge place, and selling stuff online comes down to three things in my opinion.
1. Getting lots of people to your site.
2. Getting the right people to you site.
3. Making it easy for them to find what they want on your site.
The more people that visit your site, the more chance of success and if you get the "right" people to your site, that is, people who are interested in your product then that chance of success goes up. And finally if you get lots of the right people to your site, it needs to be easy for them to find what they want. If it's not they'll leave just as quick.
Social networking, advertising, SEO are all things that can help direct people to your site.
