I had my online jewelry site for several months but get only limited traffic. As a result of limited advertising funds, I decided to spend $50 advertising on Adwords. Unfortunately though the keywords I choose generated about 100 clicks, it didn’t generate any sales as a result of the ad.

I have several questions:

1. Is Adwords a good place to make an online jewelry store?
2. Could you offer any other suggestions on how I can better market the site?
3. Do you have any recommendations on how to market to women between 21-55 online?
4. Does it make sense to assume that since $50 didn’t generate any sales on Adwords, I’m simply barking up the wrong tree?

Your inputs would be greatly appreciated. If it helps, the site is glamforless.com

Thanks in advance Smiling

First of all I think you have a nice site and very functional.

The problem that I see is creditability, name recognition. People buying jewelry if they purchase on_line will more often by from a name brand like, Macy's, Blue Nile.. ect.

If you recieve 100 clicks from google adwords I would say you had some lookers, but they were turn away because they know nothing about you or your Caompany.. and I think you would be the same way when spending your money.

Only a suggestion but you may consider adding some affiliate links like to Macy's, Blue Nile.. and others that have the name recognition.. the idea would be if you have lookers for jewerlry they may buy from one of your affiliates, and you get paid a refferal by them

If you try it and get the affiliate linkage up then go back to adwords, and try again and see what happens.

Another suggestion your "title" is "Celebrities costume jewelry stores. Holiday gifts like pearl necklaces and diamond earrings."

This reads like a description not title.

Because your main keyword "jewlery" is not part of your Company name you may want to consider "Glam for Less - Costume Jewlery!"

You have | between your keyword selection I would replace "|" with commas.. also I would remove generic words like "store" "celebrities" "holiday".. and a few others. Because you will get scored down on your relevance.

Just some rambling and I hope it helps.

Hello, Lisa

Adwords, for all types small scale sites (and large) is a good way to promote your online business. Through my personal expierence using Adwords I am am satisfied with the performance of my ads. You might need to select better keywords that target the specific audience you are trying to attract.

Do not get discouraged if your previous efforts at Adwords didn't generate any sales. Search around the Adwords site and read their promotion suggestions to advertisers this can be of some help.

There are many other creditable PPC programs on the Internet. Search around and see what you can find. Some PPC programs target more of a specific audience than others. Do some research before you join (so you don't waist money).

In addition, you may want to look into some other types of advertising such as offline promotion and link trades between you and other related businesses in your industry.

Note: When you do link trades IMOP you should not engage in this activity with sites that are on the same level as yours.

e.g. If your site sells rings you would not link to another ring site would you?

...instead try to find sites that are "generally related" such as one that sells products that clean jewelry...

James

I just want to thank everyone for their very insightful and informative feedbacks.
They are truly appreciated. In fact, I will be updating my site soon and plan to apply your suggestions.

I do have a question regarding the replacing "|" with commas. Based on a SEO firm’s recommendation, I updated by website earlier this week by replacing the commas I originally had on with "|". Was I given the wrong advice? Since I'm very new to SEO, how do I separate or differentiate between good and bad advice?

Again, thank you.

I think that SEO doesn't know what he's talking about. You ALWAYS seperate keywords with a comma.

You need to change your keywords for your adwords account to something more specific. I have a site with an adwords campaign selling real estate in honduras. At first I selected "honduras" as one of my keywords but soon realized that "honduras" was to generic and no one was inquiring about property. So I went with "honduras real estate" even though I got less click but they inquired more about property.

Find a keyword that is specific to what your site does.

You are very welcome Lisa.

It can be difficult to differentiate between good and bad advice sometimes. The best suggestion I can give you to overcome this is to ask questions and compare what people are telling you with the advice from others and your own previous knowledge on whatever you are getting advice on.

lisabloom,

It is truely difficult to know good advise from bad advise. That is the problem with much of what you pickup on the web.. but it is also what is good about the web.

If you have the personaility that you are easily swayed then those that have strong marketing skills will lead you down the wrong path, and that is something that no one can help you.

I wish you all the best

First, I want to say a big “thank you” for all your feedbacks.

About a few hours ago, I decided to review the website of the SEC firm that suggested I replace the commas in my keywords with "|".

I found it interesting that they use commas instead of "|", for the keywords on their website. As a result, I have updated the site using what I originally had on it…commas.

I have also replaced the title on "Celebrities costume jewelry stores. Holiday gifts like pearl necklaces and diamond earrings" with “Costume jewelry stores inspired by celebrities.”

Should you have any more advice on how I can better market and promote glamforless.com, please feel free to let me know.

Again, thanks a million.

If your site came to us for review it would either be edited from our end, which many do because often websites SPAM the keywords.

In your case your have not only spammed but used actual names of Celebrities, and I dought you obtained premission.

"costume jewelry stores, celebrities, costume jewelry, holiday gifts, pearl necklaces, diamond earrings, bracelets, sterling silver, bridal tiaras, hair styles, holiday gifts ideas, mothers day, weddings, prom, birthdays, anniversary, valentines day, paris hilton, britney spears, jennifer lopez, carmen electra, jessica simpson, beyonce, christina aguilera"

Here is an example of how a search engine can place you and edit your meta tags to be more relevant.. "if they want to", and often there is not an incentive to go through the effort because so many other sites are aviable..

Go to one of my sites and do a keyword search for "costume jewlery" or just jewlery and you will see you site featured at the top.. then try the other keywords that you have selected and you will see they do not pull up your site.. just an example to help. Also note I changes your title..

Try 411locate.com

Anyway I may sound harsh, but I would consider another SEO to help if you are serious about your web presence.

I hope my words do not offend anyone because I am only trying to help where help is needed.

I can suggest to submit your site to as many directories as possible, I can show you at the begining 2 directories that are ours: HaaBaa Web Directory & Search Engine and UkWebMaster World Link Exchange Directory.
You can find many others directories searching trough the web.

Hi,

AdWords has been the most cost-effective way to advertise my sites. Don't assume that the 100 visitors you received were worthless...they may not have bought any jewelry from you, but some may have bookmarked your site for future consideration.

If you've spent $50 for 100 visitors, I think you may have bid too much on your keywords (I never spent more than $0.10 a click in PPC campaigns). Lower bids sometimes can be compensated by writing killer ads. I suggest spending some more time tweaking your Adwords campaign before giving up.
