I talking about PR 6 and 7.

Why do you want to increase your page rank? In most experts' opinions PR is not very meaningful anymore in terms of how your pages will actually rank. However, for a directory like you it will influence people to sign up for your site (or not - PR is a somewhat useful measure of quality when webmasters are looking at things like this). Nobody is going to want to list their site on a low-PR directory unless they really think they will get traffic from it. In order to increase your PR you need to get links from higher quality site. That (probably) means PR 6 or higher.

As Megan said, you have to get links from high pr sites to get a high pr. The best way i increased my PR was doing article submission such as on prweb and other press release sites as well as working on getting inbound links.

Ok so this may sound dumb but bear with me Im only new to all this!
If you put your site in a directory and then your site eventually gets a higher PR than the directory will it effect your sites PR?

Try and find blogs with a high page rank and post comments on them but don't spam. This will give you a link back to your website and help build your link popularity. You can also submit to some high PR directories, this will give you one-way links also and boost your PR.
PR6 and 7 is a nice rank but hard to get right away. My website is a PR4 and I have had it for about 1 year and a half. Just keep building links and over time your PR will increase. Concentrate on one-way backlinks.

You need a few quality high page rank links from older sites. They are quite hard to archive since according to Matt C. buying links isn't a good choice.

Build links with higher PR (like PR8 or so) and be patient until Google updates PR
