I have have always wanted to know if some of the free advertising methods that used to be prevelant a few years back are still able to pull in income with today's busy internet population. I have had mixed reviews on the results of the methods mentioned below.

1. FFA (Free for All)
2. Online Classifieds
3. Traffic or Hits Exchanges
4. Safelists

If anyone has had any positive results from these 4 free advertising methods, I would like to hear about it. If these forms of advertising are working for you, what type of business do you end up promoting? Business Opportunities, Get Rich Quick Ebooks, Traffic Exchanges, Internet marketing books?

I would like to get a general census on what seems to be working with these methods, if any at all.

1. FFA (Free for All) - this will not work
2. Online Classifieds - works to a little extent
3. Traffic or Hits Exchanges - work reasonably well
4. Safelists - people usually treat them as junk mail.

Online classifieds do work. The rest are a waste of time.

You may want to give them a try but do not expect extraordinary results.

FFA site - I don't think they would work
Online Classified ads may or may not work as they do not generate enough traffic
Traffic or Hits Exchanges will send you many untargeted visitors
Safe List - catchy headlines may get your message across.

My opinion is the only free advertising that can get you the kind of visitors you want is optimizing your webpages to get a good placement in Google.

Posting your link in forums related to your site can also bring in some traffic. But don't spam forums, take part in the discussions and just leave your link in your signature. Sometimes link exchanges with related sites can bring some traffic your way too.

The methods you listed will only get you a lot of junk email and some like the ffa can prevent your site from getting picked up by search engines.

no they very rarly work, and the visitors they do deliver to your site are usually pretty poor quality. the best "free advertsing" is to link swap with other wbesites as this also helps your search results in the search engines.

Go to google and type in "Free Classifieds" The ones that appears first are usually the most popular. Also, check out the page rank.

That is odd. When you type in free classifieds in google, craigslist is nowhere to be found. You would think they would be in the top 10 results. Aren't they THE Free Classified Site?

I would even throw in those $30 for 10,000 visitors methods..
Just complete crap as far as I am concerned...

None of the above ever worked for me. But I have had other "free" methods that have worked. I have advertised in forums as per rules and responsed to services needed requests. And also writing articles and including my link in my byline when allowed has also helped.
