I'm new to owning my own website and I have been trying everything to promote my site. I was wondering if anybody has had any luck with traffic exchanges? Traffic exchanges haven't done much for me so far. If anybody has had luck do you have any tips?

Is this like the Bravenet one where you have to launch a pop up/under? Is there a way of making it targeted?

It's good that it's free, but i'd be worried about annoying current users of your website with pop ups. However, if your site/business isn't the sort to get repeat business, perhaps it's worth it. Ultimately there aren't many sites who use pop ups anymore, the only ones i know of are rather dubious!

The problem with traffic exchanges is that you tend to get your site listed on other websites also trying to build their traffic. So the quality of the links are a factor in using this for a method.

Consider this for example: you join a free traffic exchange and your site is listed on 100 other sites trying to build their own traffic. Combined they get 1000 visitors per day. However, the sites are totally unrelated to yours and thus most of these visitors have no interest in your sites services, products or material. So what have you gained. Well you might say that you receive 10 visitors per day for this effort, but is this quality traffic and does it convert for you.

On the other hand you pay for a link or a banner ad on a site that has visitors that are highly interested in your types of products, services or materials. This site is well established and has 10,000 visitors per day. The chances are that you are going to see some traffic from this site. How much? Well that will be determined by what you are offering and the placement of your ad on that site. The point though is that you will most likely have a much higher conversion rate since these people are already interested.

Building your site from the beginning is more about building a brand recognition and trust. The majority of sites only become successful after their owners put in many, many hours of long hard work promoting them and establishing their reputation as an authority and trusted business owner.

You are right and the problem is that people will use these to boost stats unnaturally. This is a tactic used by a few people to sell a website and then when the new owner gets it the stats plummet.

I guess nobody has had any luck. Me either, in the two weeks I've been using them I've gotten no sales. I did have a few people subscribe to my newsletter but not enough worth mentioning.

I always wondered about traffic exchange.
I mean, isn't it obvious when it is always exactly 30 seconds?
Like humans will all look for exactly 30 seconds every exactly 3 minutes!

What do others think?

At the end of the day again it's down to what sort of site you have... if it's a gossip column bout Paris Hilton then the majority of people (sadly) might give it a quick read, and maybe click on your AdSense or other advertising. If your site is for selling left handed bowling balls then the likelyhood of someone reading on is pretty slim, as you're too targeted.

Reciprocal links are very good at getting traffic to your sites. Just refrain from exchanging links to sites that looks like a link farm as this would hurt a bit on your PR Wink It is still best to focus on getting organic/natural links.
