I am subscribed to a newsletter by David Frey and he sent out a good idea on how to market. The point of the email was how it is really hard to send out postcards and snail newsletters to small business people because they are so busy. The things you send in the mail would just go unnoticed. So a bank in some city sent out a left glove in a nice big envelope. Imprinted on the left glove was the bank’s logo. The person who received it was probably wondering why they didn’t get a right glove so they would read the letter. The letter said if you wanted the right hand glove you need to come to our bank and claim it, because our bank is your right hand man (or something like that.)
I thought that was a very clever idea. Do you know of any cool ways to market like that? How do you think a small web design company utilize that method?

well i had something for fun that was three years ago, my friend and I was making a site for his newly opened pub, I made a card that reads "visit this so and so site and you might win some beer" then below a small print reading subject to terms and conditions, more information on the site" ... then on the site we write, if you see a beer bottle flying on the screen, take note of the numbers printed on the bottles and claim your prize at "my friends pub address" ... It was really fun and we hoared quite a number of hits locally and gave just 3 cases worth of beer, which was fairly cheap considering the number of customers flooding in. We just left those card on waiting areas, some table on somebodies office, etc...

One of the best marketting ideas I came across was years ago, many years ago.
A local nightclub had some little round sickers printed about the same size as our £1 coin
and each night they would stick the stickers on the coins in the till
eventually these coins would spread out and were found all over the world lol.
if I remember it said something like "This would buy you a Pint at...."
I've always loved that idea.
in fact I might get some printed up with my website on and stick them on every coin that crosses my palm ..
the cost is minimal.

These are rather intresting...
But unfortunately, these are only things that work locally, not globally
No one wants to actually share a good way to market online, with a good ROI. Or isn't there such?
There are some things which will for sure bring you traffic, but then the question is, is that traffic worth it?
Anyways, luxury marketing is a idea i fell love in with.
Take a high profile lead / client to luxury things, like for a cruise with a luxury yacht, and take a bunch of those high profile clients, try to look so that they might have something in common.
Do these luxury things for them, and they will become your clients just for the sake of getting the next free luxury cruise with gourmet food, or where you get on a football match that "room" high up? can't remember name for that, but they will be waiting those things to happen, and will stay your clients just for that.
Another which i liked is that you "share" ad space with local businesses, to get something valuable in return, ie. that they put your item for sale, and you have them listed as a vendor on a newspaper ad and so forth.
Remember the phrase "If you'll scratch my back, i'll scratch yours"
I like that thing Nomax told... Now, how could i apply this to my market >;D

This is more after the fact, but I recently started this. Once I've finished designing a site for a client, I'll design and order 100 postcards for them to mail out that promote their new (or newly redesigned) website. There's no extra charge for that, it's more of an added bonus.

Do you put a little thing about your design services on the postcards, to help generate new customers? Something like "XZY.com was redesigned by Tim..."?

I consciously decided against that actually on the postcards, for a a couple of reasons. #1 is the biggest reason. I don't want to get new clients by offending current clients.
1. It tells clients that these postcards aren't really to help them, they're to help me.
2. If someone wants to know who designed the site, 99.9% of the time I have "Designed by T&S Web Design" on the site already, and they can click through to my site.

I've found the web designers/developers advertising are usually the newest ones in the market place (or the over priced ones).
Ideally you need to build/redesign a high profile site with your 'tag' at the bottom - site by you. Curious people will check you out and if you are able to make an impression people will remember.
