I'm questioning this because my site SearchBliss has launched it's first ever photo/image contest for cash prizes and more, in the hopes to increase traffic and publicity. Please visit http://www.searchbliss.com/searchbliss-photo-contest.htm for details.

Has anyone else here tried anything like this before? And did it work for you?
Thanks.

If you were giving away an actual, physical prize, you could advertise it on http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/

I've done that before, and my traffic skyrocketed. But most people didn't stick around, they just entered the contest.

You could also try affiliate schemes...

It's better to target the product to the type of people that might visit your website, otherwise people signup for the prize. I run a freelance design forum, for example, I would giveaway a graphics tablet or a html book Smiling

The products (or prizes) do have to due with my visitors. One is cash (that is universal) and unbranded web design tools.

Thanks techniner, but so far only 2 people have submitted (and there are 3+ cash prizes), great odds for them. There is still a month and a half to go in the SearchBliss Photo Contest so I hope the submissions start pooring in, but I am skeptical.

Contests are a great way to target visitors. Just try and use physical prizes that target your visitors, and it will be fine.

RealDN.com, are you saying that cash and digital goods don't work as well?

I think you're going about it the wrong way, its an innovative idea but i can't see it working yet. Competitions should have as little effort involved as possible. Just do a 'best photo' competition. If you posted that on Deviant Art there would be millions of egocentrics that would apply for that. At the same time i would lower the payout, people would be happy with $100 as a top prize for doing nothing really!

When you are more known people may make the effort to use your logo or url in some way.

Well, thanks for the input. There is still over a month, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed. I already have entries so I can't change it now. Thanks.
