What do you think about this...

For every 10 webmasters that sign up on my marketplace site, 1 or those 10 gets $10 via paypal? I would call it the "10 for 10 Contest" or something like that. Do you think it is a decent incentive to sign up? My mother thinks it’s corny but it just may work. What do you think?

I really need some members and I think I would keep this going until I had about 500 new members. I would also supplement this with standard advertising on webmaster sites and newsletters.

The problem with this is, people may sign up just to be paid, then drop it.

That's a good point SearchBliss, and what about people that sign up multiple times just to get paid, then drop it?

I think content and incoming links is the best way to get your site going really. "Content is king," as the cliche goes. Wink

You're right, but that doesn't really bother me, at least I have sign-ups. That make it look more full. Maybe I should require them to post at least one thread or comment before they are eligiable for the prize? That will create more content and make it look busier, and who wouldn't want to join a busy marketplace?

Jeeves, what other kind of content could I put on the site? Maybe I should go buy some databases with resell rights and distribute them on my site. DBs with famous quote, this day in history, famous birthdays, etc? Any ideas?

It should bother you. Things will look active for a while, then dead. Don't you want it to remain active?

I know I am optimistic about it because it is my site, but I think once they see the initial burst of activity, they will continue to stay active, even after I stop the contest. I am also going to be spending money on marketing until the end of the year as well.

You could be right, maybe all the traffic will leave once the contest is over, but sometimes you just have to take risks. Plain

why not make a contest in thread postings, like make a thread with a content writing contest for a particular topic like cheese or something... winner gets $... seems to have worked for other forums...

Or maybe, the people who make the most popular threads can get the money.
