How do I check the links to my website (backlinks)?
I figure I need to know how to do that for google, yahoo, etc.

Google doesn't show all the backlinks you have, just a sampling. In the Google search box, type in "link:www.example.com" and in Yahoo, type in "link:http://www.example.com -example.com".

You can manually check the back links orelse you can check it with seo tools.

I find the Yahoo linkdomain: command to be very helpful. It also shows your linkbacks in order of importance, so the highest quality links are displayed first followed by the poorer quality (in order). This is a good way to tell which linkbuilding tactics you should continue with and which ones aren't really helping you. Keep in mind that Yahoo also shows nofollowed links (nofollow is a bit of a misnomer in that SE's do actually follow them, they just don't pass value).
