I am trying to find a way to build a forum from the ground up. I have it finished but I need people to start posting. How would you recomend getting a christian forum going?

Two things you need: people, and things to talk about. You could get people by taking advantage of local contacts. Make up some cards and hand them out at church, and ask friends at other churches to do the same. Or email your christian friends and ask them to pass the word around.

For things to talk about, start up the forums by posting some intersting topics for discussion. Either something that everyone would have something to say about or controversial topics that will get heated discussion going. Controversy makes things interesting.

As Megan said, you need some topic starters.

Such as: "Jesus was a Jew!" discussion at blahblhaforum.com

Then spread the word wherever you can...

blogs forums press releases, check all the suggestions and ideas
on this forum, there are plenty

Forget your local church.

Stuff travels downwards better than upwards!

Make sure your site is finished and has some decent stuff on it, then:

Email every church leader you can get an email for (Catholic and Anglican Archbishops, General of The Salvation Army, Moderator of the Church of Scotland, etc)

Email every Christian newspaper editor (almost every denomination has one)

If you sell it to a local vicar, you may get some of their congregation taking an interest in the forum.

If you sell it to the leaders at the top of the 'tree', and to editors, then you may get the whole of the church interested.

Finally, why not add your site to a few directories. My free directory, for example, has a 'religion' section.

Commonly people use a web forum as the center point for a web community. However building a popular forum is no easy task and requires patience and dedication. For forum going the forum must deals with subjects that are interested to people.

Dreamweaver is the best possible tool you can get for web design, however it wont do it for you. You have to have experiance when using PHP and all its tools.

You can invite your friends to post something useful. But forum promotion is not easy. Funny and helpful topics are needed at the begin.
