Yeah that is pretty vague.
Summing it up: blogging provides a way to communicate with visitors on a regular basis, add more content to your site, and build a loyal readership that you can upsell your main site too and help spread news virally.
You'll notice lots of big name sites now have blogs and journalists and other bloggers follow it so if you post some interesting news on your blog you'll find other people quickly talking about it and linking to you. Of course its not that easy but you get the idea.

Can anyone explain how we can increase traffic to a blog. It may be true that blog has links to main websites which increases the ranking of main site. But, how can we get more traffic to blogs. I have seen people promoting products through their blogs. Majority of them don't even have a main website.
Can someone help?

Getting traffic is the hardest part. Aaron Wall has talked many times about how the whole "great content" idea and blogging is a bit overrated because great content doesn't matter if nobody sees it.
You may want to read Rand Fishkin's series on the linkerati (3 links there) - this is the key to getting traffic to your blog. How exactly to do that varies depending on your market. I find that linking out also helps a lot - you can leave trackbacks on other blogs and most bloggers will read the people who reference them. If they like your site they may decide to subscribe to your RSS feed and link to you at some point.

One of the benefits in blog concept is that it can be updated easily. Compare to site it is easy to increase the traffic of blog as it favors more user interaction.

You will attract a very select audience with blogs. There are still a lot of people out there who simply will not read a blog. On the other hand, there is a growing group who read nothing but blogs and forums.
I think it is a great addition to a website, as you will be able to attract that hardcore group with a decent one. But to have it as the core of your website you will need a great blog to have any sort of success.

Well i am not so sure if blogging helps in website promotion. But one thing for sure. before you start blogging, you need to know how to write alot. As for myself, I only write when i am in the mood. Maybe you should get your family to help you write as well

I'm not sure what this means, but linking out is definitely a good thing to do when you're blogging. Most bloggers will read blogs that send them a trackback. It's an easy way to get others to notice you and if they like you they may link back to you.
Another way to promote using blogs is to comment on other popular blogs on your topic. I don't get a huge amount of traffic from this but it is the best kind of traffic to get - relevant, targetted visitors, interested in your topic who already read other blogs and may subscribe to yours.

Yes, and it can get more traffic if the blog owner puts more design in his blogs and better articles within the blog.

Yes, blogs are better traffic producers, but sad to know that we are many times rediirected to the non-related sites by Google, just because of these blogs.
