I think they are a total waste of time. For SEO and plain advertising. When was the last time you clicked on a link from a free for all link page, and how many people do you think look for FFA sites? Zero.
google and other searchengines clearly warn in their webmaster guidelines against posting in FFAs and also against linking to them.
except for those who are posting links, no ordinary visitor sees them.
it is a total waste of time
FFAs are sure way to get banned. It is certainly a way to get banned. Instead focus on writing neat and quality contentand build a nice decent link neighbourhood.
FFA advertising actually worked 10 or 12 years ago (I can't exactly remember now)
then what marketers found out was to set-up 1000s of FFA sites just to harvest e-mail addresses (Remember this wont be illegal since the poster was posting to their ffa sites), marketers sent auto responders to these e-mail addresses. - That worked 6 or 8 years ago.
THen there's the BLOG blasters, which spammed to death your blog, - that worked 3 or 4 years ago.
