I think your question is overly vague... but I would say a number of facts can hold you back. You need a solid and flexible business plan, you need to be in a field (if you are an affiliate program providor) that is unique and unsaturated, and you need to offer a wide variety of programs and offerings. Again, marketers, publishers, and merchants are three different topics, so you need to pick one.

Hi,
I have one word for you: Traffic.
If you have the traffic you can make good money from affiliate programs, the problem is that traffic takes time and hard work (unless you have money to spend), that's why it's hard to build a good income from affiliate programs quickly.
