Hi all,
Im new to this site but sought it out directly because im at a loss as to how to began actually making money with my site.
My website has litterally gone through the roof.. exceeding my expectations... by far. For this.. I am grateful..
however, as far as making money with this I am at a loss.
So heres the lowdown..
In July of this year I began a small website for videos. I also wanted to be able to host images for people ( non-porn) for avatars, family pics..etc.
Once a week I go through and delete about 100 mb's of files people have uploaded. For $5 I offer webspace and the uploader for them to have to host their images on. They can upload about 20mbs and admin that themselves. Ive only had one taker so far. I presume this is because I still offer the free one.. but that is not an option (as far as getting rid of the free one.it has to stay..)
Also, I host over 400 videos with about 20-100 new videos updated weekly. Included are around 100 free flashgames... all this for free.. there is the ability to sign up.. but only 66 have since I redesigned in October to a php site.
Now.. I still havent made any money though (save for the one person who paid the $5for his uploader.)
I have nothing to sell.. and pop-ups suck.everyone knows that.. so thats not an option.. so how can I make some money???
Its now 2 weeks b4 Christmas and I got Laid off on Friday
.. so ya..this is reall a personal issue suddenly (new daughtr and all)
advice? comments?

well I was reading some other posts on here and other webmaster forums.. it seems that others have been contacted by companies wanting to advertise... so how do I notify companies I have space to advertise? (aside from CJ and what not, I just don't trust them... their counts.. at 6 or 7 a day is soo not accurate.. probably because of pop-up blockers and the fact that im the North American site for SpyBot SD.. many/most of my visitors are using the built in spyware blocker in it.)

At the risk of attracting trolls, lol, you have to have content that the companies feel would attract people who will buy their products.

ha -- I didn't look at your site! Just a general thing -- people like k10k get corporate sponsorship because of the nature of their work, big firms often want to advertise on sites that have the right audience, like upcoming trailers for movies on a humour site.
As for the trolls, we've been having some hot and heavy debate in the seo forums regarding whether content will get you anywhere. I find trolls give me heartburn.

ahhh copy that. So a site like mine (about 400+ videos and 100+ video games, forums..etc..blah blah blah) could "potentially" attract someone then?
Also, what can I do seeing as some asshat has already spoofed my site making it a gay porn site lol... God Help us all

the question is also partly the caliber of your site (which you haven't linked to yet?) -- larger corporations will only choose sites that consistently reflect their branding. Smaller companies aren't as brand-focused and may choose sites that are similar but not 100% in line with their corporate mandate.
You could research companies that would have products your current audience would be interested in and present them with the opportunity to advertise on your site.
As for the dupe, you can follow copyright legislation and go after the person, or live with the honor. If it causes site confusion, it would be better to get him/her/it/them to change their site.

Anyways, I dont know about what to do with the gay site. (God that sounds odd)...
I dont think it any sort of honor to be spoofed by them.. but it does explain some odd hits I was getting from 4 different porn sites (I guess they got confused as well.)
Im pondering your idea about targeting the advertisers. My stats indicate an international audience (130 countries) with a large number coming from Europe. Only about 50% are from the USA. I know roughly my demographics (from polls)
73% Male
40% 18-24
45% 25-35 (the rest are mixed ages)
When I posted in those three threads originally to attract people, two were motorcycle websites and one was a gaming forum. Now, much of my traffic comes from genmay.com, mokkels.nl and about 20 different gaming and/or automotive forums.
I know this too... One of the videos I hosted was a vid of a Road and track editor tearing up a brand new, not yet in production Mitsubishi on loan for a test in so cal. He was really messing that car bad lol.. but when word got back to R&T about the video... they emailed me asking me to take it down so as not to ruin their relationship with mitsubishi
(which I thought was cool of them to acknowledge my existance
)

would you take $25 a month for a banner ad?

I would certainly have gone for Google Adsense. I made some good money on that program on a tenth of the traffic you are getting. Definately reccomend it.

odd..I thought I replied already (must have forgot to hit reply before I closed the browser...)
Indeed.. I think $25/month is a fair rate for a banner (not being an expert ut it sounds reasonable to me).
I tried the ad-sense thing but they rejected me on "inappropriatte content". Not sure what that means as there is nothing pornographic or anuything that could be considered obscene... its pretty much a PG13 rated website. I emailed them back asking for clarification... Ill post how that one goes later.

Google may have picked up something they don't like. They can be very picky!
As for the banner offer, although we are not allowed to discuss price fixing on this site, I would have suggested that you are maybe selling yourself a little short here. If you would like some guidance on what sort of price you should be aiming at then email on philsimplycfhost.com

Don't sweat it. The very worst that would have happened is one of the mods would have kicked your teeth in!

well im going off of my visitors from my webstats.
Im not sure where your getting your Alexa info though. currently it shows 370,000 some odd number. but the daily is at 20,000 in rank (up and down around 40,00 max now) in alexa ranking.
on the main page of the site is an alexa graph.
Part of the problem I believe in not being read before is that one of my main sources of visitors was from the SpyBot sd resource. Seeing as the site is the main download mirror for spybot..and that spybot kills all spyware (alexa has about 43 pcs of spyware in it)... alexa effectively gets killed..ergo.. no ranking :S
but now that a have a larger audience outside of the spybot arena.. the stats are showing.

being heavily networked into the automotive forum\site scene, I can tell you any site that hosts videos will TAKE OFF. Racingflix.com comes to mind, they went from small, to HUGE, to pay. You might want to maybe adopt the model that they use, but maybe a more broud video selection? Also watch out because now you are recieving compensation for what im geussing are copyrighted videos from other people. For instance the R&T video... take that in mind...

my website is http://www.FXClips.com
the secret is I dont really know. This is my 4th website and the only one with a modicum of success. (the others have since closed).
Some things I did do however, I feel contributed to the large numbers:
1) I am hosting the updates for a free popular program. I think that due to the "sites" registered on my stats (namely, over 200,000 per month) that google somehow reads this and believes my site to be bigger and more popular than it is. Thereby bumping me up in the searchs, which is another thing...
2) Google (see above) searches bring around 60 people a day to my website. So with #1 and good meta tags.. something was done correctly.
3) Free content that google can "read". my videos dont need membership to view. If they did Google wouldnt be able to read them at all and that would drop me down a ton from them. So dont use pass word protected areas, unless your able to post the entire content on your site somewhere hidden from the general view but where the spiders/bots can still read it.
4) Content that people seem to enjoy. I have games (which to be honest aren't being played much anymore. Videos that are updated weekly en mass...
really thats about all I can think of. Hopefully it will help you out a bit.

Hi
Where did you find out that you get up to 17,000 visitors from?
Reason i ask is i looked at alexa and your site is ranked 572,456 However another site that has just opened about a month or 2 a ago is at about 300,000 and they dont recieve up to that many visitors a day.
For all of you that have looked at alexa and looked at where you are ranked then if your above 572,456 then you should be receiving more visitors than that a day
or does alexa give wrong information? (question for anyone)

Alexa measures 'traffic' not necessarily visitors. The ranking isn't based on the number of visitors you receive, you have to dig a bit deeper into the listing for that information. A site with a lot of large video files and whatnot can get a low Alexa rating really quick, because the files are so large.
