There are in fact 14 ways to advertise your website. In my office there is a fat but nice guy who does all the work for us. He does anything I say it is useful on those days when I just cannot be bothered to do anything. Do look for websites which help you with this task.

Of course there's more than 10. There's an infinite number. Sarpras was just trying to make a quick list of some of them to help newbies out, I'm sure.

I've released a free ebook on the subject myself. (available here). Here's some brief highlights. Of course, the effectiveness of each of these varies with the intended audience of your website.

- Start an email newsletter
- Start a paper newsletter
- Have a giveaway
- Place a newpaper ad
- Include your URL in your email and forums signature
- Write articles in your field of expertise

That's just a few of them I can remember offhand.

Do you know of sites which allow you to sponsor a word for free or have some sort of graffiti type wall? Those give free advertising.

Many people 'market' there website and still don't get many results...

The key lies in the website result, it has to look good and offer something different. Most successes on the internet are due to viral growth/word of mouth. Create a site that is worth talking about and you are half way there.

I'd say blogging. Content creation and linkbait is key these days. The rest are mostly low-quality methods. Some, like telling everyone you know and forum posting could work if you do it right (and you know the right people).

what is linkbait

Linkbait is content written with the intent of getting linkbacks. There are certain types of content that get linked to a lot, and the experts have ways of writing stuff that people will be more likely to link to. So things like top 10 lists, for example, would be described as linkbait. Often these aren't the best quality articles in terms of providing new knowledge to the community, but they are the sorts of things a lot of people will share, including linking to them and posting them on social bookmarking sites.

It takes some planning, but Google Adwords (PPC) can be very effective for getting exposure to keywords for which a landing page is not yet competitive for in organic results. Yahoo is also very good, but does not have the same massive reach as Google.

Maria Veloso’s "Web Copy That Sells" is a good read for those looking into ways to improve web copy for selling. However, one should definitely take her advice with a grain of salt and make changes necessary for your particular market.

Marketing is an iterative process that involves many different tools. No matter what you do, it is always important to measure your results. The conversion ratio is the most important metric to keep track. It shows you what tools are working and what ones need to be cut.

Hey, sorry guys, I've been busy getting my new company up and Adam.

As per the question above, Error Pages can be used because sometimes people either 1) try to see if you have a specific URL in your domain (i.e. Your domain is domain.com and you're selling something. The visitor thinks you have a download file called domain.com/thankyou/download.html but that file doesn't exist. What happens then is you would have an ad there saying, something like "OOPS! You've come to a page that no longer exists, but since you found this secret page, please take advantage of our special offer!)

Then 2) a visitor simply accidentally found a real broken link - oh well, at least you have a second chance to sell something to them.

Just a thought.

Sincerely,
Kevin Lam

The of a secret page seems to be rather unusual, the only weak point might be the domain name taken by somebody else.

I just built a new 404 page for my blog with a search option and links to my best posts and my most recent posts (still need to tweak the layout on that a bit!). Much better than the default! I think it's always good to give people some direction when things like this happen. This helps them to find what they need on your site. Otherwise they're just going to turn around and go back.

Yes, nice ways to promote a website if you have time. There are many other ways that can work out nicely. Today I was reading on a forum, that a guy bought a few pr7 and 8 links, he invested about $2000. His page rank jumped to 7. Then we sold links and got $5000. Bonus $3000.

The idea is that you have to have money from some place to be able to promote your website(s). I don't think anybody will sell his house to promote a website.

IMO marketing your website start from your content. Providing useful and relevant content in your niche is very crucial. Here are my top 5 picks:

My top 5 are :

1. Great content - be it information, service, products... providing relevance and usefulness gives you higher chances of making a visitor into a customer
2. Forum and blog posting on relevant niche - you participate constructively and learn new things while promoting your site via signature.
3. Pay-Per-Click - done properly, best at getting target traffic faster on a direct marketing approach to your potential clients.
4. Targeted Link backs - another premium way of getting the right traffic.
5. Article marketing - useful and relevant articles to your niche is a nice way of link baiting.

zimajays, RSS feeds content that you can give to other people to show on their sites. It is often content that changes regularly (news) and it links back to your website.

Take the BBC for example. They have dozen of RSS feeds - sport news, business news etc... - that you can add to your own site. If someone clicks on of the links they end up on the BBC site.

Quote: targeted links vs just plain links

Not all links have the same value. A link from a site that are relevant to your website, or links from pages that don't have loads of links are of better value that any odd links that you can get from 'most' free directories or links exchange.

Thanks for that! Makes sense I guess! So is there an ideal way of doing things - or is it a case of the more you do the better? And can someone please tell me if affliate programs work and how do you check that they have what they say thay have?!

A little bit. Most of those are low quality/low return ideas. You'll need to be more creative to get real traffic and also put a lot of work in to properly optimize your site and create content worth linking to.

It's interesting that people have mentioned stickers, etc. Offline advertising can be quite effective, particularly if your website is for a bricks and mortar business.

One of the more innovative methods of offline website advertising I have seen was a URL chalked on the sidewalk of busy streets. Many thousands of people see these ads, which cost next to nothing. Also, they are self-removing, getting washed away with the next rain.

Some areas may have laws against this method. However, it could be highly effective in places it's allowed.

I love the directory list, thanks for the information guys.

Is it worth buying traffic for your website? I saw some websites that offer 1,000 hits for $9.99, but I'm not sure how that works.

If it's traffic targetted to your site contents then yes, it might be helpful.

If it's just random/any old visitors then it will be a waste of money.

I think it's difficult for other people to drive visitors that is targetting your content exactly. If you sell T-Shirts for example, how can you be sure all the people they send to your site are wanting to buy a T-Shirt?

Some sites might do a good job, but there will be a lot of cons out there too.

1,000 for $9.99...100 visitors per $1
It's very cheap if you make a decent sale per visitors conversion.
If your least profitable item is $0.50 profit per one item sold, then you need to sell two of those for every 100 visitors to break even.

In a world without fences and walls, who needs Gates and Windows?

ideally, i'd like to try as many of these tactics as possible. i come across lists of ways to promote sites which list as many as a 101 ways, if not more. after all, every little bit helps, especially for people in my position, who're just starting out, and learning how to improve traffic.

tough though to read later or hear later that something you tried won't do much for traffic. heard of someone who spent a large amount of time submitting to blog directories, but really only receiving traffic from one or two. not that that traffic wasn't appreciated, but still, it must've been deflating.

anyway, will give these tips, and those found at linked sites, a go, and see what happens.

Yes, it's true that a lot of the common methods promoted on lists like these are really low quality. Including the list posted to start this thread. Think about two things:

  1. Where is your audience? Who are they? Who would link to your site? What would they want to link to? How would they find your site?
  2. What do the search engines want to count as relevant inbound links? They want links that are editorially given based on merit. Most of these suggestions are more quantity than quality. Which can be okay, but it's the quality links that are really going to put you ahead.

If someone important likes your site they might link to it. This could get you some very good linkbacks. But, you'd have to be very careful about how you go about asking for the link. A lot of people would probably just ignore you.

Here's some more advice on asking for linkbacks from important people.

Hello,
Black Hat techniques also useful to promote any site such as d * Keyword stuffing: Packing long lists of keywords and nothing else onto your site will get you penalized eventually by search engines. Learn how to find and place keywords and phrases the right way on your Web site with my article titled Learn Where And How To Put Keywords In Your Site Pages.
* Invisible text: This is putting lists of keywords in white text on a white background in hopes of attracting more search engine spiders. Again, not a good way to attract searchers or search engine crawlers.
* Doorway Pages: A doorway page is basically a “fake” page that the user will never see. It is purely for search engine spiders, and attempts to trick them into indexing the site higher. Read more about doorway pages.

Networking

Networking can have many benefits to promoting your site. I am always adding people on instant messaging services and talking to people related to my field. By networking and making friends in the business you can learn from each other and help each other which will benefit your site.

The best way to do this is to meet people in forums or on sites related to yours and chat via instant messengers. I usually run 5 different instant messengers that are all filled with business contacts and friends

Nice tips.

The thing that I was havin' a problem with, was "spiffin" up the homepage of my site, to catch peoples eyes. I realized most people like videos, flashing objects, something that will catch their attention. I also went snoopin' around for a different way to get traffic, than everyone else, and found this site "Noobing". I signed up about 2 months ago, and it's doing pretty well. I had to pay a little fee in the beginning, but haven't paid a penny since. Basically pays for itself.

My site isn't for a business, but has to do with Computer Software/Hardware help, and I calculate my downloads, instead of sales. Which I don't see a difference. My thing is trying to get people to notice my site, and realize how much it could help them, so the more people that download, I calculate that as gettin' more "Sales".

Megan, I have to say that that 404 error page is brilliant! What an excellent way to let visitors still feel connected to the site, rather than like they did something "wrong," something that is an "error."

Hi,

I would like to share with you the importance of video marketing.

Video marketing is easy, simple, effective and cost effective technique.

All you have to do just upload a video to the most popular sites like Youtube, videogoogle, videoyahoo etc and you can get quality backlinks in short period. Also marketing through videos is more effective.

I think one thing you could incorporate to almost all of the 10 things on the list would be viral marketing. I still don't understand it completely, but as I see it, the gist is that you want to write your content and headlines in such a way that everyone will want to link to it. For example, having a Top 10 List for Twitter is going to get some circulation on twitter and other sites, just because the ingredients in the headline make it viral.

Hi Sarpras,

Good but the promotion ways have been increased, you need to edit this post and update the list with social bookmarking and video blogging. But Be sure that google penalizing the sites which have site wide links from blogs. So try to have link from blog home page rather from site wide.

And submit your sites to css sites like http://www.didloo.com (its our network site only i am not promoting it you can search and get more sites) to get a free back link.

Design is important, but it's really just a way to spruce up navigation. It doesn't have to be "spiffy" to work. I keep reading that design isn't as important as people make it out to be...it's the content that needs to be there.

Anyway, these area all great tips. I'm not sure how blog commenting can really translate to big gains in traffic, but I will still try it out.
