I am considering starting a niche link site but am tentative about giving away links to build a base....
What is the business theory behind offering free links and how does a site that does that make any money?
Free link sites are everywhere and I'm curious how they stay in existence....

Talking purely business - I would have thought the best way to make money from it would be to give away free links but also charge for premium links (i.e. links at the top that are highlighted in some way). You can also utilise external advertising feeds such as those provided by overture, google etc.
In all honesty though, I don't think a lot of link sites are done to make money - there isn't really much call for them nowadays with their being so many good search engines and directories already around.

Basiclly you want to run a free link site just to collect free leads. Everyone that posts to the site is opting in to your mailing list and than you can send promotions to them. This is a technique many marketers use to build their mailing list.
You can also make money by placing Adsense or other affiliate advertising on the site. I would not recommend ever posting to a free links site. You will get no traffic and a lot of spam and also search engines don't like links coming from these sites.

So, the idea behind a free links site is to collect e-mails? But according to the law to send a newsletter you have to have you recipient's permission, otherwise emails are spam. So, all free linls sites are illegal?
