Your questions wide open with no specific question, but it really depends on what you’re selling. For a retail or subscription orientated web site accepting credit cards is absolutely necessary. For other business (such as web designers) it’s not as necessary but it can increase sales.
a. If you’re selling a product or one time service accepting credit cards will make it more convenient for customers to purchase “on the fly”. It takes a lot more effort to get someone to save your order information, write out a check, and mail it to you.
b. If you’re selling more expensive services or products the surcharge (2-3% usually) can make accepting credit cards too expensive for merchants. I only accept credit cards for invoices under $500.00. On the other hand I’m working with clients under contract.
Take a look at http://www.onlineorders.net for some more general e-commerce information. If I missed your question entirely please ask again
Adding CC's was the life blood for our business. Many would-be customers didn't want to deal with the hassle of sending checks. Impulse buyers are an important market too. And people feel safer using a CC than sending a check.
The most important reason is - it's expected of an online store! I don't know of any really successful online business that doesn't accept CC's.

I also agree, it depends on what your business is.
But in general you want to give people a variety of options, so no matter what form of money they have, you can get it.
