What do you call the type of advertising where someone pays for links on a webpage that are embedded in the text?
For instance, if you were reading the above line and the word advertising was linked to someplace, how do they get that in there other then contact the site owner directly?
This must be called something and there must be services that offer this... which is what I'm after.
Thanks

Extremely annoying?
Just kidding, I don't know. I spent ages creating a user stylesheet on a certain site to get rid of those the other day.
Do you mean the ones like on this site? With the annoying pop-up things and double underlines?

yes, something like that but without the popup/under box on the rollover.
more along the lines of a wikipedia site where when you click on a keyword and you are taken to another site or page. I know they are annoying but am curious as to how to put them on select pages of my site to help defray hosting costs.

Found out it's called "in-text" advertising and you need a certain volume (large) of hits per day before they'll let you put it on your site. Dozens of companies offering it. Now I know. Thanks

Theoretically, if people don't know they are clicking on an advert, it could be VERY effective as they think they are just following a link within the site. The problem is that most of these ads make themselves very obvious and so not so many people will click on them!

Other people call these content links, as they are embedded in related content.
They are suppoused to better for seo than regular links placed in a footer or in a box that is not near the content.
Of course that counts only when the links are related with the site content. Search engines treat them like more "natural" links.
