what type of advertising is this called?
What do you call the type of advertising where someone pays for links on a webpage that are embedded in the text?
For instance, if you were reading the above line and the word advertising was linked to someplace, how do they get that in there other then contact the site owner directly?
This must be called something and there must be services that offer this... which is what I'm after.
Thanks

Extremely annoying?
Just kidding, I don't know. I spent ages creating a user stylesheet on a certain site to get rid of those the other day.
Do you mean the ones like on this site? With the annoying pop-up things and double underlines?

yes, something like that but without the popup/under box on the rollover.
more along the lines of a wikipedia site where when you click on a keyword and you are taken to another site or page. I know they are annoying but am curious as to how to put them on select pages of my site to help defray hosting costs.

Found out it's called "in-text" advertising and you need a certain volume (large) of hits per day before they'll let you put it on your site. Dozens of companies offering it. Now I know. Thanks

How effective is this type of ad method?

Theoretically, if people don't know they are clicking on an advert, it could be VERY effective as they think they are just following a link within the site. The problem is that most of these ads make themselves very obvious and so not so many people will click on them!

Other people call these content links, as they are embedded in related content.
They are suppoused to better for seo than regular links placed in a footer or in a box that is not near the content.
Of course that counts only when the links are related with the site content. Search engines treat them like more "natural" links.

Banner Advertising is also a good median for getting targeted traffic to your site, but you need to judge the websites properly before posting a banner advt. on it.

If I am not wrong, he is talking about paid text links which kept on a website very similar to Banner Ads, Most of advertising text links are found at the bottom of a web page.

The type of advertising you do depends on what type of online business you have, who your target audience is and how much money you have to invest. Without advertising, your business will remain stagnant and you won’t generate the kind of traffic, and customer base, that your online business deserves.

It's called in-text advertising. Been around for quite a while now, something I have not tried and probably will not try as I think it's not a good advertising technique to use on any of my sites.

Google's "Text Link Ads" are obviously Google Ads, and they are quite visibly ads. Personally I've found Google's "Text Link Ads" excellent for bringing in the money as they're usually relevant to the site content.
However, the single word link that is included in some sites, that you think are links within the site but which are really disguised links to some other site, drive me mad. Once I've been on a site that has these disguised adverts, I make a point of never returning to that site.
I like my ads to look like ads, and I hate anyone who tries to con me otherwise.

Yes our seance it's 'text link' contextual link; means links exchange or link build with content area. When you are doing link building with content The process you can put links other webmaster's blog or website.

The Jargon for that is "Infolinks Ads" but they are not useful as they makes the post less user friendly.
I would like suggest you to go for some other kind of Ads like Banner ads, Affiliates etc (if you are planning for the infolinks)
