Ok my friend want's to sell cards (birthday, congrats etc.) online via her own site.
What (if any) are the laws regarding doing this for a UK site?
I'm guessing they'll be rather complicated regardless but i've done a bit of reaseach online and just get confused.
From what I gather, if you're selling items (say from your garage or something) or you are not intending to make a profit from your sales then there is no problem. If you intend to make a profit you have to declare it to the old tax man and count as self employed.
Is that the case or can someone just explain the basics or where to look please?
It's not exactly a major enterprise she's starting (you can see the current site here) for example each of those designs through the link are effectively one-of-a-kinds/limited in number as she makes them herself). Oh and excuse the site, it's not my doing but i'm going to help her with a new one.
Cheers guys

Check with the tax man, here in NZ we are allowed to earn $30,000 before we have to pay tax on it. This is of course a base earning, not on top of a wage etc.

Yes, ask a tax man or a financial adviser... if you're friend plans to go big and legit, then that's the proper way... you can always start small and don't need all the tax cuts, or the business license, but when business starts to be good, then you can apply for those...

The tax office in Salisbury do a short course on book keeping (I know I went on it). Also there's the Business Link, who're very friendly and know what they're talking about. They do very cheap courses on running your own business.
The only thing she needs to worry about is declaring the tax, for that she'll need to submit a tax return every year. That can be done through an accountant (they charge around £100 for a tax return I believe) or she could just submit it herself online.
Sorry I didn't see this post earlier.
