Well lets see, paypal is probably one of the biggest online payment providers worldwide and they're cheap and a good way to get started, however they lack the professionalism of some of the other payment providers. How well they work for you will depend on what you are selling. If you are selling fairly low cost goods to home users then you should be fine, however if you are selling expensive products or business oriented products, you would be best using someone more like worldpay etc.

I ran a business using them for a couple of years without any major problems.

It could be good, haven't tried it though. Wouldn't know if a lot of high risk merchants would be able to use it, nah?

Their "Pro" packages, i.e. Website Payments Pro, let you accept credit cards without requiring the payor to also have a PayPal Account. It will work with some shopping carts, but also costs about $30 extra per month. They also have a virtual terminal that lets you process credit cards from your account (helpful for taking phone orders) which is also $30. It's my understanding you can do this with their Web Payments Pro service as well.

One of our clients provides Merchant Accounts and Authorize.Net which is a good deal cheaper than $30 per month and will work with virtually any shopping cart. It's most certainly the most popular payment gateway. But I'm biased.

For reference, we also provide the development for their Free mobile phone applications for the BlackBerry and Droid that support both Authorize.Net and PayPals Web Payments Pro. Just click the link in my sig for download info if interested.
