Internet Music Rights
I'm the webmaster for two alumni sites and I'm concerned about music rights. I know that there have been recent crack-downs on posting copywritten songs and music, but it's never been made clear what the rules are. I've visited the BMI and ASCAP sites, and, of course, everything there is in obfuscated legalese, because they don't want any music posted on the Web at all. Nonetheless, on YouTube and elsewhere, people continue to upload music and videos from many pop bands, as well as scenes from Hollywood films. And these are viewed by thousands of people daily!
My two small websites would probably attract more visitors (alumni), if I added a good sound track (in our case, 1960s rock), but I don't want ASCAP's lawyers suing us, either.
Has anyone here had experience posting copywritten music and/or videos on their sites?
Thanks, in advance,
Roy

I've discussed the subject on some other forums, and the bottom line is: just don't do it. All your favorite music is probably copywritten by the authors, a record company, or some enterprise somewhere.
But what about the music videos on YouTube? YouTube is owned by Google and Google has been purchasing copywrite permissions from numerous artists, for specific songs and performances. (In return, the artists get exposure.) However, YouTube has special software that monitors all uploads, video and audio, and anything that doesn't have the music owner's permission is automatically rejected. Furthermore, there are real persons who monitor YouTube, including legal staffs.
If you just need a certain style of music (blues, jazz, baroque), you can purchase CDs by anonymous artists, and that purchase gives you the rights. If you do a search for "background music CD" or "generic music CD", you might come up with some good stuff. However, BE SURE to rread all the copywrite information before you post it.

'Save music Stop piracy'. I don't think youtube is working out good for giving the artist privacy. Youtube must take the membership charge form the member since it is one of the most visiting video site of the world. If there are videos of the artist than I think the artist should get paid for that.
